While he was taring at the Dog, they took to their heels for the Tent, leaving their Blankets & every thing of burthen behind them. short after the Wolf sett off in their Track but they happily reached the Tent before he overtook them. two of our Men went in search of him, but he could not be found. the dog only they discovered his jaw bone & all his Teeth where smashed to Nothing, so knocked him on the head first bringing him to the Tents. these Wolves what the Natives call Kis,que or Mad Wolves. at this time of the Year, or when the Bitches are done running, will not go the least out of the way, for one Man, & if 3 or 4 Women are in company together so well do they know one Sex from the other, many of the Indians get hurt by them. - the Night was warm a kind of Mist at a distance. some of the Stars were out. Encouragement for those Skins which was formerly given. - I presume if your Honors would take it into Consideration the great Distance these Indians come & more Commonly thro' their Enemies Country their chief trade to mostly consisting of Wolves the lofs also that has already been sustained by some of the best of our Leaders going to the French House where they receive more Encouragement. at the same time to recollect the many different Articles which are unavoidably given away & never traded (Viz. paint, Gun worms, Steels, awls, Needles, Rings, &c &c. Yet neverthelefs You require a return) by mature Deliberation I flatter myself with the thoughts that if you would put the Wolves at the late old Standard by so doing your Traders Inland will have an opportunity of convincing Your Honors of their Afsiduity in procuring furrs. We are given to understand their is another Canadian Company on foot & are Creditably informed of their Intention to proceed up the Country from the Grand Portage this Spring - I fear your Settlements Inland will become an entire Ridicule to those Pedlars who every year bring in double & sometimes treble the quantity of goods that we can get up for want of a sufficient Number of Men to convey them. You have now in my Opinion a fair Opportunity to dispel those Intruders of your Privelages. by only convey'g a large quantity of trading Goods Inland sufficient to deal out to the full extent of the Standard by this means your Chiefs would not only be able to make great returns but would entirely impoverish the Canadian Traders."
