" A copy of a Letter from Mr Will. Tomison
November 14th 1786
Mr Will.Walker
Sir,
After a Journey of nine days We arrived at the Pine Island where Mr Mackay built on last Summer, which proves to be the same place Pointed out by the Natives for us to build on. It is 60 miles above the fighting River. Their is at Present four Houses all different Interest. Two more between 30 and 40 miles above this and one at the Fighting River below So that Indians has nothing to do but go from house to house get Drunk and beg Goods on Expectation of what they are to bring. Our house is not yet finnished and is built on the same spot where Mag. Spence worked in the Summer and is 60 feet by 22. We are now at work on the Stockades but the wood is so large and our Augers is broke so that Jobb goes very slowly on so that we will not be able to get them up this Season. -
The flying up man and Beardy went from here this day and The wattenee the Safsew Indian a few days ago. These are all I have seen since my Arrival and they have been very troublesome.
There is now out with the different Tribes a Eleven men and Two with the Hunter so that the number here is but few for the heavy work. The reason I did not return the men sooner was for want of Provisions, and now I am obliged to borrow before I can fit them out; James Tate is along with the Sufsew Indians so that I could not send him to the South Branch according to Promise. Provisions is very scarce and I believe without the Buffalo comes nigher hand, will not be plenty this Year.
You will Please to send by the first Conveyance a part of the Garden seeds as the ground seems to be Tolerable. Should you have the oppertunity go to the South Branch and see how things goes on their and should they want any instructions you will give them all you are able. So conclude wishing succefs to the Company's Affairs, health and Happinefs to you and all Under your Direction and remain
Your most obedient
Humble Servant
William Tomison."
