" A Copy of a Letter sent to Mr George Sutherland Resident at York Factory
Gordon House Hill River Dec. 1794
Dear Sir,
I take this opportunity of writing to you to inform you my situation has been somewhat disagreeable this fall: Owing to my ill state of health, and the disappointment of the Batteaux that was to have been sent soon after I left York. But before the Winter came on I had sent men in a small Canoe to the factory for those necefsaries that were wanting, those Men meeting with a misfortune of breaking their Canoe about a mile below the house and of course was obliged to returned.

Soon after my arrival here one Canoe of Bungee's Indians came down to trade a few summer skins & a little provifsions which I traded & gave them a sm'l Debt. I am sorry to inform you that out of 6 Roll of Brazile Tobacco which I had opened the very day the Indians came here, was not fit for use. this artcle they wanted much & was Oblige to go without.

On the 15th of Oct. four of the Homegaurds with their families arrived here in Canoes from the factory: they remained here ten days, owing to the inclemency of the weather and the Ice driving in the river, afterwards proceeded to their Winters quarters by carrying Goods overland, during their stay here they made me snow shoes &c.

I have had the oCaision to open these Bundles No. 124 : GR2, GR1: for sake of small articles such as files, Steels &c but there were none. these articles were much wanting here on this purpose induced me to send you this for your information.

The Men have procured me here in the about 70 Rabbets which have been of great service, for theres neither fish, nor Partridges to be got here, we are constantly hunt'g but we cannot meet with succefs; there now remains at the House about 80 lb of Dried meat &c. and the prospect of getting any more is very feint as the promises of the Natives are not to be depended upon. I have not seen any of them since the setting in of the winter. I hope you'll take it into considerations and send me a small supply of provifsions as soon as you think proper, otherwise I shall be much distrefsed before six weeks expires.

You'll be so kind as to prepare a small Box containing such small Trading Articles as those that are in the packages for Inland by the return of the pacquet.
I remain,
Dear Sir
Your most Obedient and
Humble Servant
James Peter Whitford

" A Copy of a Letter from Mr George Sutherland, Resident at York Factory
January 6th 1795
Dear Sir,
Yours of the 12th Dec. arrived here on the 20th Ult. and am sorry to hear of your ill state of health, yet hope the medicines now sent by Mr Wright our Surgeon will soon restore you to your former state.

As the Ship did not Sail for England before the 25th Sept. it was not in our power to send you a Batteax at that late season as the weather proved so very bad that we could not get a few Rafts of firewood from acrofs the river.

One Englishman two Ind. and three dogs are sent with your Men, carrying a supply of provifisons to you as pr List inclosed - The greatest frugality on your part in the expenditure of what is now sent will be absolutely necefsary - as you cannot expect another supply from here before next June. Therefore should you judge that the provifsions now sent, added to what you, and what supply you may have reason to expect from the Natives be sufficient to last you during winter; you may send down one of your men by return of the Packet.

You are on no account whatever to consider Gordon House as a Trading Settlement, as it would defeat the intention of it. - as it was meant for nothing more than a store House, where Goods was to be deposited for the use of the Inland Settlements.

The Indians who may visit you are heavy debtors at this place & cannot be in want of any necefsaries whatever being well supplied from here last Summer - and you need be under no apprehension that they will Trade with the Canadians, as there as no Canadian Settlements near you.

You are therefore not to Trade for any thing of consequence with the Natives but Provifsions and by no means give them debt.

Am sorry to hear that all the Inland Brazile Tobacco is spoil'd, should be glad to know how this happened. - as I am informed it was in good condition when it went from here last Summer.

I am sorry that we cannot spare you a Sawyer as we have a great deal to do in that line here - besides you have not provifsions to support him.

Partridges, Fish, & Rabbets, has been very scarce hitherto - yet by the indefatigable of English and Indian Hunters, have been enabled to serve out two days fresh provifsions pr week.

Wishing you better health and plenty of provifions
I remain
Dear Sir
Your humble Serv't
George Sutherland

" A Copy of a Letter sent to Mr George Sutherland Resident at York Factory
Gordon House Hill River Jan. 22 '95
Dear Sir,
Yours of the 6 Jan. arrived here the 17th and am very much Obliged to you for the supply of Provifsions you have sent, with what I have by me, and what I may expect from Indians in the Spring. I hope it will be sufficient to enable me and the Men with to subsist till the arrival of the Batteaux.

I understood that this establishment was erected for the purpose of supplying the homegaurd Indians in the winter, and to save them the trouble of coming down to the factory & not to hinder their hunt. Those Indians who have visited me, wanted twine & hatchets, these articles I have supplied them with. I have not seen any of them since,

The two Bungee Indians who came soon after my arrival here, had heard of this place, which induce them to come down to trade their provifsions, and one of them was at Swan River all last winter, which has Induced me to give them a small debt. I have sent according to your request a list of their Debts.

You, I understand wish to know how the tobacco come damaged. I am sorry that it is not in my power to answer your demand. for it was spoiled before I came here. it was only the Day after that I had it opened.

When the warm weather comes, I shall be under the necefsity of building a log Tent to preserve the Goods from the water occasioned by the overflowings from the Creek. You would scarce beleive when I tell you that the Gaurdroom floor and fireplace was under water on the 18th Inst. two Inches deep. we immediately went to work to cut drains to draw the water of and by night had a dried house. I remain wishing you a plentiful spring.
I am
Dear Sir
Yours sincerely &c

Gordon House Hill River May 20th
Dear Sir.
On the 5th of March the Indians began to visit me here, they brought me some meat & a few skins which I traded from them, and have not seen any of them since the 15th Ult. soon afterwards the thaw came on and continued till the 26th, when the river ice gave way.

I have not been able to get weather-boards saw'd to cover the house as you proposed, on account of their not being capable of sawing for the purpose. - I had an House built on a higher peice of Ground 18 feet long by 15 feet wide, and is made commodious for stowing Goods or provisions, particularly for the Goods to keep them free from the smoake otherwise it was impofsible owing to a bad house.
I have sent James Halcro & James Hourie according to your request tho' much inconvenience to me here, in case any Indians pafses here, as I am not able to go as far as the Bank of the river or can do any businefs?. I am very sorry I must resign this place if I do not get better soon. - I can afsure your there is but little water in the River and am much in doubt whether your Batteauxs will get up at all the river being so very shoal.

Have sent you a supply of Provifsions by the Boats as prlist enclosed. - have also appointed Wm Houston & Thomas Anderson to stay at Gordon House in lieu of James Hourie & James Halcro who are very fit Men for Inland duty.
When any of those Indians to whom you gave Debts comes down and does not pay it to you. write me an account of the amount of such debts, and I will endeavour to stop it here.

You must be carefull in the expenditure of your Provifsions now sent - as you can have no more before ship time. - Be very careful in taking exact account of the Goods that wll be taken from Gordon House a copy of which you are to send down by Mr Longmoor as well as the expences & remains together with what furs you may have traded.
