Sept. 6 1795
" Sunday Calm fine Weather. about noon arrived at the Duck Portage, and put up. - Having met with a number of Chepawyans on our Pafsage hereto. the major Part of whom earnestly requesting a Settlement to be made here; our Provisions being nearly all expended and the Country of the Deer's River quite unknown to us. Mr Rofs & me thought it necefsary for a Part of the People to Winter here. four Men under my Care are therefore to pafs the Winter at this Place. & Mr Rofs with the rest to proceed forward. set a Net in Duck Lake."

" Monday A Gale at ENE with heavy Rain in the Morning toward Evening only Cloudy. Produce of the Net, 2 Jack & 2 Tickameg - an Indian went a Hunting but without Succefs. Set another Net."

" Tuesday Wind WNW a heavy Gale with Rain in the Morning, afterward Cloudy. - Caught 2 Jack 2 Perch and 8 Tickameg. Mr Rofs and me separating the Goods."

" Wednesday A very heavy Gale at NE with Cloudy Weather. Mr Rofs with 2 Large & 1 small Canoes went off. sent three Men to afsist them over the Point Portage. in the Evening they returned. Sent 3 Chepaywyans a hunting. One of whom returned with One old & Two cub Beavers. Caught only 1 Pike & 2 Perch."

" Thursday A Gale at NWbN with Cloudy Weather. Caught only 2 Perch. took up our Nets. dried & then set them to the Eastward of the Portage."

" Friday A Storm at NWbW with clear Weather. Produce of our 2 nets in the Morning 3 Jack. 17 Perch & 19 Tickameg. Thank God. Went and looked at a Place to build a House and found no good Wood near the fishing Place. was therefore obliged to remove & build about 2 Miles to the Westward of the fishing Place. on the south End of the Duck Portage. In the Evening 1 Jack. 1 Perch & 9 Tickameg."

" Saturday A Calm Morn with Rain till 10 AM. then? Wind a light Breeze from Westward & Northward with clear Weather. In the Morn Caught 26 Tickameg & 4 Perch. in the Evening 13 Tickameg & 2 Jack. About 4 PM 3 Canoes of southern Indians arrived; and about an Hour after about 20 Canoes of Chepaywyans with a few Skins & a trifle of Meat. Made them several Presents."

About 10 AM a Canadian (named by the Indian Sahquefs or the Mink) with 6 Men in a large Canoe arrived. also a small Canoe with their Women. they intend to build here and have pitched on a Spot of Ground about 30 yards to the Eastward of us.
