"Oct. 7 1793 Cumberland
Sir
I have the Pleasure to in form you of the safe arrival of the Honorable Companys new Ship Prince of Wales Captain Hanwell Commander the 11th of August. - Altho' by Unavoidable Delays we Did not come Away Untill 1th of Sept.

An Expedition to the Northward on Trade & Discovery being Exprefsly ordered on foot this fall & we to Proceed next Spring to that Country - all the Goods we have brought up are for that Important Purpose - None of the Articles you Wrote for are come with us the Flints &c where in Laukland Taylor's Cargo who the Evening before we came away insulted the Council & for his bad Behaviour was by them Ordered to England. we comeing away the Next by Day light Prevented me from taking Notice of the Contents of the Cargo thus left. But I have not as Yet been Able to exempt myself from Labour - the Canoe I unfortunately was in became very Leaky & not only our own things but the Cargo in it was Damaged.

Brafsey & his gang Delivered their Bundles here the Sept.? all of them that can be Spared are sent you for I cannot well tell how to Divide them indeed the Share of them for the South Branch will be Determined by the Weather they may have in the Upper Country. two of the Bundles entrusted to Brafsey No. 31 - 129 where by him sent to the factory.

Mr Thompson accompanies the Canoes as Astronomer & Surveyor he will Acquaint you with every necefsary intelligence he is by order of Council sent on Discovery & will no Doubt make himself known you his intentions - Mr James Tate his Appointed by the Council one of the Northern Masters he has Goods with him to Afsist to Provide Provisions for the North'd. the Men sent with him are also ordered by the Govenour to afsist as much as Pofsible in Collecting Provisions for the Above Place as it is a fact well known that two Much cannot be Collected for that Part.
I wish you every happinefs & succefs & Remain
Your very humble Servant
Malclm Rofs."

" Bucking'm House 27th Jan. 1794
Dear Sir
On the 23 Instant I Received Your kind favour which gave me Great Satisfaction to hear that All was well. I am sorry you Did not Proceed up to the Neepewan last fall which was my wish for you to have Done well knowing the Intentions of your Opposers Building at the Point & throwing Thoubourns? House away was only to blind you. had there been goods enough & Men I should have left Canoes there as I Pafsed but I had not enough for that Place I was going to.

I was much Surprised to hear of 6 Canoes? coming up & to bring none of the Goods that was Indented for. I cannot conceive what Men was thinking of not to send what they knew was much Wanted. 2 trips has been to some Purpose.-

I am not Surprised at the Remains of Tobacco being bad for a Great Part of what is come up this Year is as bad as ever. it is very ill made up which is partly the Cause there of. I have been Obligh'd to Open Whole Roles & boil part of it with Sugar to Rubb the Rest over. there being no Molafses causes a Great Waste in my small Stock. What ever Utility it might have been last fall to have Proceeded to the Nepewan I know not but I am Certain little can be expected at this Season of the Year. I should be Glad to know the Reason why the account of Goods was not sent that you had up in the fall. I also Received no Account of Goods brought up by Brafsey. by such Neglect nothing can be done to the Books. I thought there was a sufficient quantity of Brandy left at Cumberland House to have Answered every Demand both for Furrs & Provisions that comes to that Place there being only 4 Kegs short of what I had here so that I think you had no accasion to have taken up 16 Gallons from what you brought up it being time Enough when the Other was out - the Smith has made a handle to your Saw & sent it by this Conveyance to the South Branch. I was Obliged to use one of our falling axes which we could ill spare. the Principal Part of the Trade will be lost for want of Goods My Guns are Gone. Blankets large & several other Articles are also Done. I was Obliged to Apply to Mr Shaw for flints before I could ? fit out men to Procure Provisions & maintain themselves in the Plains. I am very sorry to Inform you of the Great lofs of Goods last fall by Manchester House being Robed by a Band of fall & Blackfeet Indians & the men Striped of everything thay had. I left the Cargoes of 3 Canoes there as I Pafsed by with 7 men not being Able to leave any more at that time & before the men Return'd the Deed was done they Staved the Brandy At the Gate & took the Iron hoops. had there been any Goods here the Lofs whould not have been so much - Dried Provisions is very scarce here & I am Dubious that I shall not be Able to Procure enough to serve the Canoes Down not withstanding I have had 400 lbs from those in the Plains. so Conclude With wishing better Succefs to the Companys Affairs health & happinefs to you & all under your Direction &
Remain
Sir
Your very h'ble Servt
William Tomison."

"Cumberland House Dec. 2 1793
Mr James Bird
Sir
As the two Houses in Opposition is nigh about half way between you & me but your half is rather Shortest. If you can Conveniently sent an Officer & some men with some Articles of Trading Goods to the Place above Mentioned. I will send 4 men & of the following Articles Viz. Brandy Cloth Powder & bayonets Which is all the Articles I have got but what is gon out in Debt but I suppose as your Compliment of Goods in the fall was Short if your Trade is good you have little to spare of any thing but if so should be as you have any thing to spare you will be as Expeditious as posable in sending your People to the place that I may get word if any of your Officers that you pitch upon should not choice to venter himself in a Leather Tent. Please to send down a large Tent & hunter from your place. I will venter myself & leave Mr Twatt in charge here if this Doth come to pafs we shall share the Returns if any in proportion to Tradeing Goods from each place. haveing nothing more to add I conclude with wishing Succefs to the Companys affairs health & happinefs to you & all under your Command.
and am Sir your most
Obedient & humble Servt.
Malchom Rofs."

" South Branch Dec. 17 1793
Dear Sir
I will according to your Request send men & Goods Down to meet you Where the two Canadians Houses are in Opposition. It has ? some time been my wish to send men to that place but for want of a proper person who I could spare to accompany them I have not been able to accomplish it.

I can send You a Small Supply of all the articles you have not got Tobacco & Blankets excepted. of the former I have only two Rolls & part of these if I may judge from one I have used is Damaged as for the latter they are all Traded early in the fall. a Tent will likewise be sent you a Hunter only I can not afsure you of - this I have spoken to one who seems rather in Doubt what way to act but should I not be able to Prevail with him you will find plenty there you can engage.

Nothing shall be wanting on my part to second your Good intentions but wishing you Succefs
I Remain Sir
Your humble Servant
James Bird."
