From Mr Malchom Rofs to Mr Magnus Twatt
Pit a hegen sapey December the 16th 1792
Mr Magnus Twatt sir
I have the plasure of Informing you of our saf arrival here the 14th of october. I found Mr Thorburn Ready to follow us go where we whwould with 12 men and an Interpreter and two Canoes loaded of goods and hade 6 men and an Interpreter to leave at this place with a bove? one canoe load of goods I found it necefsary to my oun thinking not to gave him the Chance of having 2 Houses as they will Gave the Indians an oppertunity of Cheating me out of the debets which will be the case at last in spite? of all my Industry.
all Cumberland House Indians is indebeted to the Canadans Excepat? Chage? alou? when the Canadans found I was likly to get the buter? of them by Incouraging the Indians they have taken another meathed and sent their men to attend the Indians and get the skins as they kill. There is no fewer then 3 of them with brassey and the little Gut one of them an Excellent Interpreter of both bungee and Southering Indian he being a half Indian and a son of lewes? Premner? whom was formerly in the Honourable Companys serves.
I found it as you told me befor I left Cumberland House hardly any water in the Sturgeon raver the Indians with difficulty could go with their Canoes light and was ablidged to leave them and walk by land very short up the Reaver wher they left their Canoes which made it un poasable? for me to go that way for to Exacute? Mr Tomisons wish of which was my wish sincerly. The place the Indians proposed for a house is only about 8 miles above this place which would been no beter if it had been there.
Sir if you cane spare it you will send the remainder of the quantety Brandy I was to have taken with me in the fall. I may have use for it and ? not? that is the article that I have Expended a great deal of this fall on account that they will take any thing Els but brandy and if I denay them they know wher to get it. my Expences is a Great deale and returns? very little dos not Exced a 150 beaver in furrs not a mouthful of Provisions have I got since I have been hear but for that article brandy or Cane get for any other thing a for Provisions I am been verey much Pot to for it Ever since I have hear? till this three weekes that the hunters is killed 5 Moose but two of them was dried I had one from the french hunters when I was verey much in need I am afraghted we shall be verey badly of in the spring when hard hunting if you Cane spare it I will be verey much ablidged to you for a little beat meat and fish to gard agenst bad times if you have not we must submit to fortune.
If William Tat be well I would be glad if you would? send Jhon Ballanden up hear eather to go out to Brafsey and thos with him or to take Cares of the House as the men I have dos not understand one word of Indian which is the only thing I am unhapy in with them other ways they are the best lads I ever saw come into the Counteray since I have been in it if the Indians had their labertay to come to the house I Could do verey well such lads. I have nothing more to add but Concloud wishing yoou and all under your Command halth and happenfs with succefs to the Companys affars and I remain
Dear Sir
