" From Mr Malcolm Rofs to Mr Walker
Cumberland House May 12th 1790
Mr Wm Walker
Sir,
I have taken the Earliest opportunity pofsible of sending a Canoe with the disagreeable News of the Death of Mr George Hudson who departed this Life April 19th in a sudden Manner. he had been ailing for some time. but not so much as to Confine him to his bed; in the latter End of March he was attacked with a swelling in his Legs. which afterwards set up in his body accompanied with a dry Cough. which at last took him of suddenly.
I am sorry to acquaint you of the low state of affairs of this place when I took Charge. which was on the 20th April after an overhaul of the Trading Goods Provisions &c was made. Mefs Philip Turnor, Charles Isham and myself we found only 1 quart of Brandy and that in mixed stuff. very little Cloth and a very small Quantity of Shot. and no more Provisions than 150 lbs of Beat Meat, 50 lbs of Fat and 20 lbs of dried Meat. the last of which provisions is served to the Bearers for their Journey to you. - One great Motive in sending a Canoe to you is the Hopes of your being able to supply this place with more provisions than you could otherwise have brought down. and should you"

" from Mr Malchom Rofs to Mr William Walker
Cumberland House Sept. 20 1789
Mr William Walker
Sir, the Bearers are two of them that arrived here 25th July last, in the same Canoe with those that embarked Goods for your Settlement the 5th Instant. they proceeded from here the 29th July and went to the Great fall to wait for Mr Tomison with an Intent to enter into their honors Service but Mr Tomison not coming up and they not wanting to agree with the Canadian Traders they came here again. and as I could say nothing to them on that head I advised them to go to you as undoubtedly you can satisfy them on that head.
Sir as I could not wait for any orders from you in fitting out the Indians for their winter Quarters I have followed the old Rules of the House and have trusted the Indians Debt which I hope by the spring of the Year to make Account for please God to spare my Life and I stay here.
I Conclude wishing you and all under your Direction may prosper Both the Company's affairs and their Servants which is the wish of
