" Hudson's House 13th May 1787
Mr Hudson Sir
I thought to have sent a canoe down much earlier than this but the inconvenience of the times has prevented me till this time. Mr Longmoore took only 6 canoes from Hudson House last fall & freighted the rest of the Goods by Land this has put a great stop to expedition as we are obliged to make a second trip before we could bring down the Furrs as also to have some carried by land. I am happy to inform you there is an increase of Trade this year which I may say is got out of the Fire. as the Canadians is going through the barren Ground with Rum like so many ravenous Wolves seeking whom they may devour. the trade at Manchester House turned of 5000. at the South Branch upwards of 2000 and at Hudson House 1100 and add exclusive of about 1000 more from Manchester which is not yet paid for and will go to next years Account. we have got 5 canoes off the stocks here by that good and laborious Servants Magnus Twatt and Edward Wishart. and the black Indian is afsisting to build two more at the South branch and promised to me the other Day to come down with the people and go to the Factory. I have sent by the Bearer the Journal book to be copied as it will be some time before I can Embark from here. I conclude Wishing you and all under your Direction Health and Happinefs and remain
Your most Obedient
Humble Servant
William Tomison."
