Dear Sir
On the 1st instant I had the pleasure to receive the Pacquet by Captain Richards of the Sea Horse. I also received your favour but could not prevail on the Indians even to take a letter. I therefore have agreed with Thomas, Ned, and Mathecoot to proceed directly to Cumberland House with your Letters and an abstract of the Company's private Letter to me which I am sure will give you great Pleasure as also the Company's other servants. it runs thus; being much Pleased with the good conduct and behaviour of our Servants during the confusion occasioned by the devastation of the Enemy we have credited according to the advanced Wage set against their Names in the same manner as they would have been intitled to had their several contracts been executed. " Copy of a Letter sent to Mr Humphrey Marten
Cumberland House April 11th 1785
Mr Humphrey Marten
Sir,
Your Pacquet came safe to Hand April 10th '85 as likewise a paper containing Files 15 by the Bearers Thomas, Black Ned, and Mathecoot. Mr William Tomison proceeded for Hudson's House in the Fall short after his Arrival here (which was October 1st) with the greatest Part of the goods and Men having left me in charge of Cumberland House. I have opened the pacquet and delivered the Men the Letters here but can not get the rest forwarded to Mr Tomifon as the spring is far advanced and the Saskachewan River part broke up. I have given to the three abovementioned Indians a supply as follows Viz. to each 1/2 yard of red plain cloth, Powder 1 1/2 lb, Shot Bristol 6 lb, Tobacco 1 1/4 lb, Flints 4, Knives yew handle 1. File 1 amongst them to carry them down to your place again; they left their families at the sweet herb Lake. as also their Winters hunt and came to this place sleeping by the way five nights. The Trade at this place but small having traded only between 4 & 500 made Beaver. I expect between 3 & 400 more which will be the extent, but expect Mr Tomisons Trade will be large as by Mr Longmoore's information. last Summer there was a good many Indians of Different Tribes that intended not to pitch? in 'till they heard whether their Honors servants arrived with Goods or not. as they was very hard dealt with by the Canadians last winter as having no other resource but to Trade with them. The Canadians have built a House about a fourth of the way down the north river track at a Lake called the reed Lake; Weesepenum arrived here from them the beginning of February he says they have not made a great Trade & their goods expended. what trade they have either would have gone to York Factory or otherwise came to this Place; the Bearers will Inform you as they saw them on their Journey to this Place; We had bad succefs in fishing occasioned by the shoalnefs of the Water having caught only 150 Sturgeon a few Pike and Trout but have had good succefs of Moose and Beaver from the few Indians here about being only eleven in Number. I conclude wishing the greatest succefs to the Company's Affairs, Health and Happinefs to you and all under your command and remain
Your Ever Obedient
Humble Servant
George Hudson"

" Copy of a Letter sent to Mr William Holmes a Canadian Trader
Mr William Holmes
Sir
I have put up with much of your abusive Language this Year which has by your Order been communicated to me by Umfreville and have often been falsely accused by the said Person in many things that had no foundation as you well know what you was aiming at. so was I not ignorant of your bad intentions of endeavouring to raise Disputations; Sir there is neither Indians nor Canadians that can be proper evidences because their words are variable. the former will tell lies for what he can get and the latter thinks no harm in swearing against the truth for which reason a Wise Man should not easily give Credit to the reports of Actions which he has not seen; you wrote to Mr Longmoore last year that he had no right to Trade. nor even to be on the Ground where he was; I am much surprised you should take so much upon you as to write in that manner without showing your commifsion for so doing but who is in danger of the pangs of envy is generally forced to recreate his imaginations with an efort of Contempt. Sir you are to understand that the Honorable Hudson's Bay Company has an undoubted right by the laws of England to trade into the interior Parts of Hudson's Bay without being molested by you or any other Person without shewing a Commision for sodoing. were all the vexations of Life Put together we should find that a great Part of them proceed from those calumnies and reproaches which we spread abroad concerning one another. there is scarce a Man living who is not some Degree guilty of this Offence, tho' at the same time we treat one another; it must be confefsed that we all consent in speaking 'ill of the Persons notorious for this Practice it generally takes its rise either from an 'ill will to Mankind, a Private inclination to make ourselves esteemed Ostentatious a vanity of being thought in the secrets of the world, or from a desire of gratifying any of those Dispositions of mind in those Persons with whom we converse; the Publisher of scandal is more or lefs odious to mankind and Criminal in Himself. as he is influenced by any one or more of the foregoing motives but whatever may be the occasion of spreading these false reports, it Ought to be considered that the effect of them is equally prejudicial and Pernicious to the Person at whom they are aimed. the Injury is the same though the Principal from whence it Proceeds may be different as every one looks upon himself with too much indulgence when he pafses Judgement on his own thoughts or actions, and as very few would be thought Guilty of this abominable Proceeding, which is so universally blamed. there are three instances by which I would have a man examine and search into his own Heart, before he stands acquitted to Himself of that evil disposition of mind I am here mentioning; first of all let him consider whether he does not take delight in hearing the faults of others. secondly whether he is not to apt to believe such blackening Accounts, and more inclined to be credulous on the uncharitable than on the good natured side; thirdly whether he is not ready to spread and propigate such reports as tends to the Disreputation of another; a man should endeavour therefore to wear out if his mind this Criminal Curiosity, which is Perpetually heightended by listening to such stories. I Conclude with one Observation more. he that thinks very highly of Himself expects much submifsion & observance from others and therefore cannot but rage and quarrel when ever he thinks it not sufficiently Paid and remain.
Yours
William Tomifon
Hudson's House
April 10th 1785."
