" Copy of a Letter received from Mr Robert Longmoore
Hudson's House December 1783
Mr Tomifon
Sir
I received your kind Letter October 23d with the very Unwelcome news of the Honorable Hudson's Bay Company's unfortunate Situation of Affairs. in this Quarter I do Afsure you that had things turned out (as I was in hopes of the Ships Arrival) it certainly would have been the best Year on our Side that ever we had. as I had all the Southerns that had no furs last Year away at Beaver Hunting and the Susu Indians along with them. Sunday the 7th Inst the Round Knife Arrived with four Sufsu young Men for Tobacco. & Englishmen to go out with them as they promised to me in the Summer; I had nothing to supply them with they would not go any Further. they said they did not goe to Kill Furs for the Canadians and they would not go nigh them so the Round Knife & them stayed one night and went back to their Families; the Sufsu Chief is killed, but the gang is still as good as ever. Sir. I am still in some small hopes untill I hear from you whether there is any news from below of the Ships Arrival at Churchill or York Fort is a bad Put? when much Ice is on the coast. Sir could the Company have good in any seasonable time. there will certainly be a great many Furs remaining amongst the Natives this season. Mr Holmes Informs me that he will not have any goods by the Middle of March and he certainly must follow the Ice down. Sir according to your advice I applied to Mr Holmes for what you ordered but I only received 78 lb leaf Tobacco, black Tobacco could spare none, Powder 63 3/4 lb, yew? handled knives 3 Dozen to Order Vermilion 2 lb, likewise 1 lb you will Receive by the Pacquet Knives 12 N, Brandy between 4 & 5 Gallons and Leaf Tobacco 20 lb but as for the Powder by the time I served out 20 Men for the Winter I had a very small stock remaining for to get a mouthful of Provisions but still I cannot say but the Natives that are nigh Hand behaved well. as for Cloth I had none. when? the sorrowfull news arrived. nor Powder; it cost me a good deal to keep the Natives off untill the Canoes should Arrive being so late and to my sorrow my Expences was in Vain. Sir. Mr Holmes says that being in partnership Furs is the only payment that he can receive. there is 4 skains of Sturgeon Net twine all that he has. two new nets that you will receive likewise. Mr Holmes in the fall before he gave me the Supply stood in that I should have a House from him and all the Company's Servants to live as his Own and supply for the Winter. but I informed him that Before I would be under any such restraint. I would leave a man in Charge. and two or three more to take care of the Company's property and to go Myself with the rest of the Men. to pafs the Winter along with the Natives without any Supply further than an Iron hoop. He said that was what he would be sorry to see or hear off any of the Company's Servants being put too. all he Required was not to trade furs which accordingly I agreed to; As God knows I had nothing but Ice chizsels, Bayonets, Low India and the Shot that you sent. Sir if you can pofsible spare any Cloth I should be glad of some & some low India or lead and if in case that you Approve of it, it is my Opinion that those Men should pafs the Summer at this Place for Encouragement to the Natives that they may have no Mistrust of saving part of their hunt against the next season. who knows fortune may have a turn to our side, as I have a great thought of it. Sir the Mens names if you Approve of it you will mention to Stay I shall do my Endeavours to have some Provisions if Pofsible to help Out for them so no more but Wishing better succefs to the Company's Affairs. Health and Happinefs to you & all under your Command.
Dear Sir
Your most Obedient & Humble Servant
Robert Longmoore"

" Copy of a Letter sent to Mr Robert Longmoore
Cumberland House December 30th 1783
Sir
Your kind favour Dated December 12th came safe to hand the 25th Instant which gave me Infinite pleasure to hear of your good State of Health which I sincerely wish the continuance of, though at the same time I sincerely lament your Disagreeable Situation as also my own, and the Company's lofs of Trade. which we cannot help. their Honors must? bear the Lofs and we must reconcile ourselves to our hard lot it being the fortune of War.

Sir I received from the Bearers the following articles of Stores and Trading Goods. Viz. Rum 5 Gall., Tobacco Leaf 20 lb, knives yew handle 1 Doz, Vermilion 1 lb, Twine Italian 6 ?, two small marsh Nets and 6 skains of Marline. all 7 which will be of great use to us in Procuring a little Provisions should any Indians come this way. I cannot but return my most grateful thanks to Mr William Holmes for his kind offer to you last Fall but Approve much of your conduct in not accepting it as the Goods desired from Him was to Trade for nothing but Provisions and to supply those that went to pafs the Winter in the Plains and could be of no further Detriment to him than the want of so much goods. Sir I am not against three Men staying up all Summer providing there is any thing left to subsist on, should you choose to stay yourself. I would be very glad if otherwise you will please to leave Malchom Rofs. should he be agreeable. and two more that are not Steersmen. I have sent by the Bearers 6 yards of blue corded Cloth which is half of what is here and a small quantity of Low India shot which I have cast out of some run lead from the Ruins by making moulds out of Stone. I have nothing more to add but Conclude Wishing a speedy Reastablishment of the Company's Affairs health and happinefs to you and all under your Direction and Remain
Dear Sir
Your most Obedient
Humble Servant

Mr Tomison
Sir. Your kind Favour Dated Deember 30th came safe to Hand the 25th January which gave me infinite Pleasure to hear of your good State of Health which I sincerely wish the Continuance of. though I really lament your seeing no Indians from the fall Untill the time that the Pacquet arrived in December. Sir I cannot say but I have been tolerable for green Meat. I have pafsed a little better than five Months without serving any Dry Provisions. and as for Beat Meat and fat I have not served any. only to the Pacquet Men since your Departure last Spring.

Sir. I a sorry to Inform you of the Accident that has befallen Nicholas Wishard. he was in the barren ground with Eight more in one place. March 27th he went for Meat and two more, but he was the last, one was gone, and the other ready to set of, and did not stay for him, so bad Weather came out, and he never more was heard of. only one Indian I have seen informed me that about six Days after he found a thigh bone and some flesh on it and certainly must have been the remains of him, not above five or six Miles from his Tent and next Day was a fine warm Day. Sir as I Proposed for three Men to Stay up for the Summer. I hear that the Canadians is to come from the northward with their Goods, that is not Expended, to this River. Sir I afsure you it has been very hard to Procure Provisions in such times. Sir be so good as to look in the Journal February 10th you will see what Beaver I was Obliged to send to Trade with Mr Holmes 40 Beaver skins for Rum, 10 Powder, 10 Black Tobacco, two for Flints, and three for Jack Knives. as the Snow was so much. to get a Hunter to save Dry Meat and no Indians. that was at any Distance could come in. and be Pleased to see the 12th February. what I received in Return likewise March 14th sent down two Men with 24 Beaver skins for Tobacco and Powder. Sir you will see every thing marked in the Journal. Sir you will receive with these six Canoes, 17 Bundles of Furs, Wolves, Beaver, some few Cats and Quiquahatches, and two or three Bears, made Beaver ? provisions 24 kags? of Pimmacan, about 60 lb and 62 lb each. what remains will come down so soon as I can get a new Canoe ready or two. if not short of Birch Rind. I embarked from here the 22d June with Upwards of 6000 made Beaver and arrived at the Ruins of York Fort on the 4th August where we pafsed our time away 'till the 8th September. sometimes starving and at other times Eating a little Deers flesh. We built a log tent 40 foot long 20 foot broad & 16 foot high. in the inside of Which we made a Platform & erected another tent which we covered with feather edge boards then stowed the Furs in the inside of all & came away with heavy Hearts; we had for our Journey 1 1/2 Hodgshead of salt Venison & a little dried Meat we had from the Indians at the Rendezvous, a few fish we caught with out nets & rock? weed? we gathered of the Rocks. we made a shift to get up without being starved.- I am sorry I could not send you a supply of Goods to Enable you to maintain the Company's Servants. Indeed I have little or Nothing left here it being chiefly Traded in my Absence for Furs and Provisions. " Copy of a Letter sent to Mr William Tomison
Hudson's House December 11th 1783
Mr Tomison
Sir
I received your kind Letter October 23d with the very Unwelcome News of the Honble Hudson's Bay Company's unfortunate situation of Affairs in this Quarter. I do afsure You that had things turned out as I was in hopes of the Ships Arrival it certainly would have been the best Year on our Side that ever we had. as I had all the Southern Indians that had no Furs last Year away at Beaver Hunting and the Sufsu Indians along with them. Sunday 7th Instant the Round Knife Arrived with four Sufsu young Men for Tobacco and Englishmen to go out with them and they Promised to me in the Summer. I had nothing to Supply them with. they would not go any Further; they said they did not go to kill Furs for the Canadians & they would not go nigh them. so the Round Knife and them stayed one night and went back to their Families. The Sufsu Chief is killed but the Gang is still as good as ever. Sir I am still in some small hopes untill I hear from you whether there is any news from below of the Ship's Arrival at Churchill as York Fort is a bad Port when much Ice is on the Coast. Sir could the Company have goods in any seasonable time, there will certainly be a great many Furs remaining amongst the Natives this Season. Mr Holmes Informs me that he will not have any Goods remaining by the middle of March and that he Certainly must follow the Ice down. Sir according to your advice I applied to Mr Holmes for what you Ordered but I only Received 78 lb leaf Tobacco. black Tobacco could spare none. Powder 63 3/4 lb, Box handled Knives 3 Dozen to Order?, Vermilion 2 lb Likewise 1 lb you will receive by the Pacquet. Knives 2 Doz? Brandy between 4 or 5 Gallons & Leaf Tobacco 20 lb but as for the Powder by the time that I served out twenty Men for the Winter I had a very small stock Remaining for to get a mouthful of Provisions. but still I cannot say but the Natives that are nigh Hand behaved well. as for Cloth I had none. when the sorrowful news arrived nor Powder it cost me a good deal to keep the Natives off Untill the Canoes should Arrive being so late & to my sorrow my Expences was in Vain. Sir Mr Holmes says that being in Partnership Furs is the only Payment that he will receive. there is 4 skains of Sturgeon net twine all that he has. two new nets that you will Reserve likewise. Mr Holmes in the Fall before he gave me the Supply stood in, that I should have a House from him and all the Company's Servants to live as his ? & supply for the Winter. but I informed him that before I would be under any such Restraint I would leave a Man in Charge & two or three more to take care of the Company's property and to go myself with the Rest of the Men to Pafs the Winter along with the Natives without any supply further than an Iron hoop. he said that was what he would be sorry to see or hear of any off the Company's Servants being Put to. all he required was not to Trade Furs which Accordingly I agreed to as God knows I had nothing but Ice Chizsels, Bayonets, low India and the Shot you sent. Sir if you can Pofsible spare any Cloth I should be Glad of some & some low India or lead and if in Case that you Approve of it 'tis my Opinion that three Men should pafs the Summer at this place for Encouragement to the Natives that they may not have any Mistrust of saving Part of their Hunt against the next Season. who knows. fortune may have a turn to our Side as I have a great thought of it. Sir the Men's Names if you Approve of it you will Mention to Stay. I shall do my Endeavour if Pofsible to have some Provisions for to Help out for them. So no more but Wishing Better Succefs to the Company's Affairs and Health and Happinefs to You & all under your Command
Dear Sir
Your most Obedient and
Humble Servant
Robert Longmoore"

Mr Tomison
Sir
Your kind favour Dated December 30th came safe to hand the 25th January which gave me Infinite Pleasure to hear of your good State of Health, which I sincerely wish the continuance of. though! I really lament your seeing no Indians from the fall untill the time the Pacquet arrived in December. Sir I cannot say, but I have been tolerable for green Meat. I have pafsed a little better than four Months without serving any dry provisions and as for Beat Meat and Fat. I have not served any only to the Pacquet Men since your Departure last Spring.

I have got as much birch rind this Spring as will make two Canoes. Sir as there is hardly any thing Remaining Malchom Rofs would rather not Stay so I shall stay for this Summer and try If I can procure a little Provisions to Meet you with at Cumberland House in the Fall. Sir I was obliged to send down the Men sooner than what I could have wished on Account to save Provisions for the first Part of the Summer as I have only some Ice Chizsels and some few Bayonets remaining and the few India you was Pleased to send me up in the Winter. Sir I afsure you it has been very hard to Procure Provisions in such times. Sir be so good as to look in the Journal February 10th you will see what Beaver I was obliged to send to Trade with Mr Holmes (40 Beaver Skins for Rum, 18 for Powder, 10 black Tobacco, 2 for Flints and 3 for Jack knives) as the Snow was so much, to get a Hunter to save dry Provisions and no Indians that was at any Distance could come in. and be Pleased to see the 12th February what I received in Return. likewise March 14th sent down two Men with 24 Beaver skins for Tobacco & Powder. Sir you will see every thing Marked in the Journal. Sir you will receive by these six Canoes 17 Bundles of Furs, Wolves, Beaver, some few Cats, and Quiquahatches and two or three Bears. made Beaver 690.
