" Fresh breeze Wly & Cloudy W. with hard frost & Snow at Intervals - haul'd all the Boats up as they can be of no further use this Year. the Fall is too far advanced to send Goods in an open Boat to Seal River. I have hitherto waited in anxious expectations that the people sent up Seal River to make a trip with Mr Linklater would have arrived eir this at the Factory. that from their Accounts I might be enabled to judge which of the two rivers? is best for conducting our Inland Trade. if Seal River should prove most eligible it would be necefsary to get all the Goods acrofs the Bay in the Fall that the Batteaux might set off Inland immediately after the River breaks. as the Ice remains along time on the Coast & would prevent any pofsibility of getting acrofs in the Spring for at least a Month after the rivers were broke up."

" Moderate breeze Variable. about 4 PM Jn Budge, Halcrow Smith, Adam Yorston? & 4 Nd Indians returned from Inland in 2 large Canoes. they left Mefs Charles, Linklater &c at Granville House where all had arrived safe. Mr S. with one Batteaux & 2 Canoes is to proceed on towards the Deers River. thus far the Rivers in the Vicinity of Churchill have proved superior to those of York as a Batteaux has not yet been Navigated up the River from there altho it is 21 Years since Inland was established."

John Linklater & Edw'd Inkster came to the Factory hauling Hugh Malchomson? on a Sled he having been seized with the cold in his head while on his Journey to the wooding Tent & was for some time delerious. fortunately Mr Nelson was in Company & afforded every afsistance in his power he succeeded in restoring him to his Senses. in a few days expect he will recover his Strength again -
Having given Orders to Halcrow Smith to haul a Sled of Provisions to the Eastern Creecks he pofsitively swore he would not obey me & gave me very Insolent Language for which the Council have thought fit to fine him."

Spence in his Room who accompanied Jn Linklater. this day about Noon an Englishman & 2 Indians arrived with a Packet from York Fort & haul'd [Blank] Gallons of Strong Spirits here. - there are now 5 Men in the Docters list unable to do Duty. " a Moderate breeze Wly & tolerable W. the Men with the Sled left the Factory again. dispatched 2 Men in search of (Hugh Gray) who had been sent yesterday to fetch a Tent from the Winter trackway & take it over the River to where the Men were going to haul Wood. - as he had no Hatchet nor any Material with him for mak'g a fire. his not returning to the Factory Yesterday makes me apprehend some unfortunate disaster has happened him - about Noon the before Mentioned Man returned to the Factory in a Weak state not having received any nourishment since Thursday & his Cheecks & Nose very much froze - in the Evening the 2 Men sent in search of him returned to the Factory."

" Wind NW a fresh Gale with Snow & drift PM cleared up a fine afternoon 3 Nd Indians arrived from the same party as the two who left the Factory a few days ago. their families are to be here in 3 or 4 days - sent James Dunning & another Man with the? Dogs to search for any remaing small piles of wood yet on the Rocks? to haul home for present firing. about Noon the returnd but could find none."

" Overcast mild W. - this Morning Mr Nelson ordered James Dunning to go acrofs the River to the distance of 4 miles with six Dogs & Sleds to bring home some fire wood from a Pile standing there. Wm Oman was at the same time ordered to accompany him to afsist in loadg the Sleds & managing the Dogs. - James Dunning pofsitively refused obeying the order and alledged as an excuse that he did not agree to any such Duty when he signed his Contract in England he was given to understand that his agreement with the Honble Company was similar to that of other Servants in the Country & a Contract was at the same time read to him - he persisted neverthelefs in his first detemination. in Consequence of which the Council was of opinion that he James Dunning should be struck off the Companys Books & not be allowed to do any more duty whatever & to be sent to England by the first Opportunity. - this Resolution he was made acquainted with & at the same time informed that his Wages would Cease from this date. - The Councils motive for putting him off duty in preference to fining him is the little use he is of in any Station or has indeed been of since his arrival in 1793. - he was many Months laid up with the venearal? disease & when in Health he has always shewn such an unwillingnefs to make himself in the least useful that it was far better to want a (CraftMaster) than have such a difsatisfied Mortal near me. - it may not be unnecefsary to mention - that prior to this date Mr Nelson voluntarily offered his Services to go with the Dogs for Wood & did go two or three Trips, so convinced was he of our distrefsed Situation in respect to Fuel."

" Fresh breeze WNW & clear sharp W. in the afternoon 2 Nd Ind. arrived. one of them had his Hand much shattered by the bursting of his Gun lately. the Surgeon immediately examined? the Wound & is of opinion excepting the lofs of the forefinger that the whole will soon heal again. - traded 50 Br with those who came Yesterday. " Light breeze & gloomy weather. early this morning sent the fishermen up the River again. People variously employed. part of the Indians sent up the River on Saturday returned with 10 Deer weighing 1439 lbs and gave account of Deer being numerous at the Woody Islands. In consequence of which I intend drying a quantity for the use of Men going trips with the Batteaux which will save English Provisions."

" Moderate Breeze SE & fine Weather. Halcro Smith arrived in the Boat with 6 Indians from Mr Nelson & brought 14 Deer. - In the eveng the Men brought the Timber to the Factory. - two forerunners came in from a small party of Nd Indians that are to be here in a few days."

" Do. Weather. wind ESE. sent eight men acrofs the River to raft some firewood to the Factory. Halcro Smith & five Indians left the Factory for the Woody Islands again. Shipwright employed at the Shallop's Deck. four Northw'd Indians arrived with Furrs, they bring very disagreeable accounts of several of their Countrymen having been killed by a different Tribe of Indians which is likely to affect the Trade very considerably as many of the Natives in endeavouring to avoid the fate of their Countrymen have hove away their Furrs and made the best of their way to the barren ground far North of this Factory."

Merriman pofsitively refused going a trip, in consequence of their refractory behaviour the Expedition that I had intended to be set on foot for the Athapiscow Lake is entirely upset, the lofs to the Company will I fear be at least equal to 1000 Pounds, besides the necefsity of Mr Charles and Myself taking upon us the management of the Batteaux. - the above are all fined by the Council but by no means equal to the lofs your Hon'rs will sustain. - 2 Sd Indians arrived with a few furrs."
