Sept. 12 1784
Sunday
" Wind at NW weather variable at 8 AM gave Captain Tunstall all his dispatches for England and immediately after he went on Board.
Most of the People & all the Craft employ'd on Board the Ship. - Received 23 Geese from home Indians. In the Afternoon the Ship sail'd out of our River with a fine Breeze at North West by West."

Sept. 13 Monday
" Fine Pleasant Weather, wind a WNW
Bricklayer & one Man to attend him employ'd in plaistering the Inside of the Smithe Shop. - Carpenters Cooper & Sawyers building a Necefsary - 6 Men went to the Stone Fort for a Long Boat load of Bricks. - Remainder of the People getting some of the Goods from on Board the Sloop, Turning the Powder into the Magazine and doing several other necefsary Jobs."

Sept. 14 Tuesday
" Cloudy Weather. Bricklayer & 4 Men employ'd Bricknoging the Officers Cabins. Carpenters as before. Remainder of the People unloading the Sloop."

Sept. 15 Wednesday
" Dark Cloudy weather with some Showers of Rain took the Remainder of the Sloops Cargo on Shore & wash'd her Clean for laying up in the Winter - Tradesmen & their Afsistants employ'd as before. - Taylors began cutting out the Mens Beaver Toggys. - Remainder of the People clearing some of the Stones Rubbish &c out of the Cellar."

" Wind & Weather Variable with Showers of Rain
Armourer & his Man making Wood falling Hatchets, Carpenters & Cooper employ'd about the Necefsary. two Men sawing Boards for various uses. Sent 8 Men in the long Boat to the Stone Fort for a Load of Plank Bricks Lead &c."

Sept. 17 Friday
" Fresh Breeze at NW which encreas'd to a Hard Gale. Sent the Long Boat & 8 Men to the Stone Fort for more Brick & other old Stores. - Bricklayer and two Men to attend him Building a fire Place in the Chiefts Lower Room. - Carpenter & Cooper building the Necefsary. Remainder of the People getting Stones ready for burning more Lime. On Man in the Surgeons List."

Sept. 18 Saturday
" Moderate & cloudy with some Showes of Rain
Tradesmen & their Afsistants employ'd as before. Reminder of the People fill'd the Lime kiln & set it on fire. - Long Boat returnd from the Stone Fort with some Bricks, Old Iron & other usefull Articles - One Man in the Surgeon's List as Yesterday."

" Strong gale at NE with Rain Hail & Snow and at Night hard Frost. - One Man in Surgeon's list."

Sept. 20 Monday
" Wind & Weather variable. Armourer & his Man making Wooding Hatchets. Bricklayer & two Men building a fire place in the Chiefts Lower Room. Carpenters & Cooper making a flight of Stairs Leading to the necefsary. Sent 6 Men over the River with a Weeks Provision & other necefsarys to go and set up Drift wood. - One Man in the Surgeons List. - Remainder of the People grinding Oatmeal for Winter use."

Sept. 21 Tuesday
" Wind & Weather variable from pleasant to a Strong Gale at NW & very Cold. Tradesmen & their Afsistants employ'd as before - Sent 4 Men in the Long Boat to the Cove for Old Casks, Junk? Anchors & other Stores. Remainder of the People at Necefsary duties. - Sent Mr Prince and his Mate up the River in a little Skift? to kill a few Geese. At Night very hard frost."

" Fresh Gales variable from West to SE and in the Evening much Snow. - Tradesmen & their Afsistants as before. 6 Men sawing & splitting a Stock of Wood for the Chiefts fire according to Custom, others at necefsary Duties."

Sept. 24 Friday
" Fresh Gales at NW with Constant hard Frost.
Carpenters & Cooper laying a floor over the Chiefts Room. - Bricklayer & one Man lathing the Ceiling of the sd? Room. Smith and his Man making Wooding Hatchets. Remainder of the People drew the Lime kiln & other necefsary Duties."

Sept. 25 Saturday
" Moderate & Cloudy with some thaw & towards Evening fine Pleasant Weather. Carpenters as before. Bricklayer & 3 Men to attend him plaistering the Ceiling of the Chiefts Room. Remainder of the People cutting a Stock of Wood for the Chiefts Fire. - The People return'd from acrofs the River having set up 26 small Piles of Wood all they could find. Mr Jefferson & one Man absent from the Factory at the Indian Goose Tent about 24 Miles up the River."

" Fine & Pleasant weather, about Noon some flying Showers of Rain."

Sept. 27 Monday
" Wind at NW with mild Cloudy Weather & in the Evening a little Snow. - Armourer & his man making wooding Hatchets. - Bricklayer & two men attend him Plaistering the Walls of the Chiefts Room not having any Boards to Line it. Carpenters & Cooper laying a Platform Leading to the Necefsary. Taylor & one Man making Beaver Toggy's for the Men. Sent 3 Men over the River to Hunt & in the Evening they return'd with 3 Hares & 30 Partridges. Two Men sawing Boards for making Shelves & other necefsarys in the Warehouse & Trading Room.
Mr Jefferson & two Men at the Goose Tent. - Remainder of the People sawing & splitting a Stock of wood for the Chiefts Fire."

Sept. 28 Tuesday
" Fine Pleasant weather People employ'd as before. Two Men in the Surgeon's List. Mr Jefferson & his Two Men also some of the Home Indians came to the Factory the Goose Season being Quite over."

Sept. 29 Wednesday
" Moderate with Constant Heavy Snow. Armourer repairing Hunting Guns. Carpenter & Cooper building two additional bed Places in the Mens House. Remainder of the People grinding Oatmeal & doing other necefsary in door Duties."

Sept. 30 Thursday
" Fine Clear weather with constant hard frost. - Armourer as before. Bricklayer & one Man lathing & plaistering Part of the Ceiling of the Chiefts Lower Room. - Carpenters Cooper & Sawyer making the Officers Cabin a little Larger for at first they were so small as to be scarse Tennable. - Taylor & one Man making Beaver Toggys for the Men. Remainder of the People Sawing & Splitting Wood. - Some of the Home guard Indians came to the Factory from their Goose Tent."

Oct. 1 1784 Friday
" Ditto Weather. People employ'd as before, remainder of the Home Indians came to the Factory from the Goose Tent. They have during this fall kill'd about 420 Geese two Deer & a few ducks."

Oct. 2 Saturday
" Ditto Weather - Tradesmen and People as before. Indians employ'd making Snow Shoes for our People. In the Afternoon Sent the People Beaver Toggy's for their winters Ware - This Day fitt'd out 8 Men with Provisions & other necefsary's to go and fall fire wood for the next Year."

" Mild Cloudy Weather & towards the Afternoon exceeding fine & Pleasant."

Oct. 4 Monday
" The 8 Men above mentioned set out for their proper Station with whome I sent most of their Provisions for 12 Weeks. - Armourer Cleaning Hunting Guns. Bricklayer finish'd Plaistering the Chiefts lower Room and the Carpenters finish'd the necefsary Stairs Rails & all belonging thereto. - Two Men sawing Boards for the Warehouse - Remainder of the people clearing rubbish out of the Yard."

Oct. 5 Tuesday
" Fine Pleasant Weather Armourer as before. Carpenters Cooper & Sawyers making Gates to the Stockades. sent the Bricklayer and one Man up the River to Catch Fish. - Remainder of the People leveling the Yard."

Oct. 6 Wednesday
" Fine Pleasant Weather. People employ'd as before. Receiv'd 120 Patridges & a little Venison from Home Indians. Indian Women netting Snow Shoes."

Oct. 7 Thursday
" Wind & Weather variable from exceeding fine to very Cold with a Strong gale at NW & some Showers of Snow. - Tradesmen & their Afsistants employ'd as before. - Remainder of the People Clearing the Yard & putting our Stock of Salt Provisions into the Cellar.
Received the Flesh of 4 Small Deer from home Indians. their Women employ'd netting Snow Shoes as before. Surgeon not well."

Oct. 8 Friday
" Wind at NW a fresh Gale with Clear Cold weather. Tradesmen as before, others at necefsary Duties. Fitted out all the home Indians with Ammuntion &c & trusted them with some Cloathing & other necefsary's ready to go a traping."

Oct. 9 Saturday
" Cloudy weather with a fresh Breeze variable in the SE Quarter. Armourer making small spikes. Carpenters Cooper & Sawyer began setting up some Stockades at the back of the New Offices to enclose a Piece of Ground for Gardens & other necefsary Uses. Remainder of the People at various necefsary duties.
This Afternoon sent all the Home Indians Man Woman & Child over the River in three Boats to provide for themselves & Families also to catch Furs &c for Trade."

Oct. 10 Sunday
" Wind & Weather variable from Warm Sun Shine to Cold with Rain & Sleet.
Perform'd Divine Sevice. Armourer not well."

Oct. 11 Monday
" Stiff Gale at NW with some Snow & Hail - Armourer & his Man making small spikes for the Stockades. Taylor & one Man at work for the Officers. Carpenters & all the rest of the People setting up some of the Stockades.
This Day Sent the People Beaver Caps & Mittens for their Winter Ware. At Night hard Frost."

" Fine Pleasant Weather tho' in the Night hard Frost with some Shingley Ice about the Shores.
Tradesmen & People employ'd as before."

Oct. 13 Wednesday
" Strong Gale at NW with very hard frost. People employ'd as before. 8 Men absent from the Factory falling fire Wood &c."

Oct. 14 Thursday
" Very hard gales at NW with frequent Showers of snow & very Cold. People employ'd as before but towards Night the weather was so bad that all hands were employ'd at indoor Duties."

Oct. 15 Friday
" Ditto Wind & Weather. Armourer & his man making small spikes. Carpenter & Sawyer making some Convenience in the Trading Room. - Taylor making warm cloathing for the Officers. - Remainder of the People grinding Oatmeal for the Winter."

Oct. 16 Saturday
" Very hard Gale at NW with Snow & Drift.
Tradesmen & People employ'd as before."

Oct. 17 Sunday
" Ditto Wind with much Snow. Perform'd Divine Service. - Much Ice in the River."

Oct. 18 Monday
" Fine Clear weather but exceeding Cold for this time of the Year. Armourer & his Man making small spikes. Carpenters, Cooper, Bricklayer & Sawyer, puting up some Shelves & other necefsary fixtures in the Trading Room.
Remainder of the People grinding a Stock of Oatmeal for winter use."

" Very hard gale at NW with ditto Weather.

" Ditto Weather People as before. fitted out the Mate of the Sloop & two other Men with Ammunition a Tent & other necefsarys to go and Hunt Partridges."

Oct. 22 Friday
" More Moderate & not Quite so Cold as for some Days past. Armourer & his Man making Spikes. Carpenters & the Remainder of the People puting up some of the Stockades at the back of the New Offices. - Hunters set off for their Station which is about 9 Miles from the Factory. River Quite full of Ice. - Two Men in the Surgeon's List."

" Strong gale at NW with very cold weather. Tradesmen & People employ'd as before."

Oct. 24 Sunday
" Ditto Weather with Snow & Drift."

Oct. 25 Monday
" Wind at NW with fine Clear Weather. tho' very cold. Armourer & his Man making small Spikes. Carpenters & the rest of the People finish'd the Stockades so that our whole works at Present is 170 foot by 164, within which is a space for Gardens of 170 foot long & 60 foot Broad.
Two Northern Indian Men (formerly goose hunters) came to the Factory for a little Trust but did not bring any thing for Trade. They say Deer & all other kinds of Game is very scarse & tho they expect that several of their Friends will pay us a visit in the fall yet from Accounts I fear that they will bring us but very little meat & few furrs."

Oct. 26 Tuesday
" Ditto Wind & Weather. Armourer & his Man making Wood falling Hatchets. Bricklayer & Cooper making small Sleds for the Hunters. Carpenters & Sawyer Squareing wood for the Men's New House. Taylors at work for Trade. One Man makeing Partridge Nets. Remainder at necefsary duties. - Trust'd the Northern Indians with a few Necefsary's & sent them from the Factory to Procure furrs &c for Trade."

Oct. 27 Wednesday
" Fresh Gales variable in the SE with Snow & thick Drift. Armourer, Bricklayer, Cooper, & Taylors, employ'd as before. Carpenter making some small Draws for the trading Room others Grinding Oatmeal. Received 30 Partridges from Hunters who inform'd us that the River was frose fast at Gallows Point on Monday last. one Man in Surgeons list."

Oct. 28 Thursday
" Exceeding fine Pleasant Weather with a Great thaw. - Carpenters & Sawyer Squareing wood for the Mens House. Other Tradesmen as before. Remainder of the People Sawing & Splitting wood for the Chiefts lower Room fire. One of the Home guard Indian Men & three Boys came to the Factory for a Little Oatmeal & Ammunition for the farther support of their Families whom they Left about 20 Miles Distant on the South side the River. - Hunter return'd to his Tent. Indians also return'd immediately to Join their Families."

" Ditto Weather People as before - Two Northern Indians came to the Factory for a Little Trust but like the others had not any thing to Trade."

" Ditto Weather tho' a fresh Gale at NW Northern Indians return'd to Join their Families & 5 others came with a trifle of furrs but not any venison."

Nov. 1 1784 Monday
" Dark & Cloudy with some Snow, tho very warm weather Wind variable in the NE Quarter Armourer & his Man making Wood falling Hatchets. Bricklayer & Cooper making Sleds for the Hunters. Carpenters making some Conveniences in the trading Room. Taylors at Work for the Officers. Sent Mr Prince & three other Men up the River with a Tent, Ammunition & other necefsary's to kill Partridges. Remainder of the People at necefsary indoor Duties.
Northern Indians return'd to Join their Families by whom I sent Presents to their Leader & other Principal Indians of their Tribe. - At Night a great flight of Snow."

Nov. 2 Tuesday

Receiv'd 70 Partridges from one of our hunting Tents."

Nov. 3 Wednesday
" Wind at NW with dark Cloudy Weather and very Cold. Armourer & his man making some Iron work for the Warehouse. - Carpenter & Sawyer squareing Wood for the Mens New House. - Taylors at Work for Trade. Jn Sinclair one of the Woodfallers having cut his leg so as to render him incapable of Duty. I this Day sent three Men with a Sled to Haul him to the Factory. also sent another Man to the Woods to remain in his Room. - 14 Men Absent from the Factory on duty. - Remainder of the People at Necefsary Jobs."

Nov. 4 Thursday
" Dark Cloudy weather wind at NW Armourer cleaning hunting Guns. Carpenters & Cooper squareing wood for the New house. Sawyer & one Man sawing Ditto. One Man in the Surgeon's List. Remainder at necefsary duties. Three of the Home guard Indian Men came to the Factory for a little Oatmeal & Ammunition to support them & their Families as Nothing is to be got but a few Partridges."

" Ditto Weather with Snow & Drift. People as before. Indians returnd to their Tent
Receiv'd 22 Partridges & 18 fine fish from one of our Hunting Tents."

Armourer and his Man making Bolts, Staples, Hinges & various other Iron work for the House. Carpenters & Sawyer squareing and Sawing Wood for the Mens House. Taylors at work for Trade & other necefsary Duties. 15 Men Absent from the Factory as last Week. Indians return'd to the Tent with a little Ammunition."

" Ditto Weather & very mild Wind Variable in the NW & SW Quarters. - Tradesmen & others employ'd as before. Receiv'd 80 Small Jack Fish from Home Indians who return'd again to their Tents."

Nov. 17 Wednesday
" Dark Cloudy Weather with Constant small snow
Armourer & his Man making Bolts Staples &c for the present House as well as for the Intended New one.
This Day sent the Joiner, Cooper, Shipwright Sawyer & one other man to the Woods to look for Timber &c to Compleat the Framing of the Men's New House as all we had on the Plantation is wrought up - Taylors at Work for Trade. Others at necefsary Duties.
Two Northern Indians came to Factory & inform'd us that a few more are within two or three Days Walk of this Place, but have little to trade except a little Poor Venison & a few deer Skins."

Nov. 18 Thursday
" Ditto Weather with some Snow. People employ'd as before; Sent the Northern Indians Back to meet their Countrymen; with whom I sent a Little Powder & Shot for their Subsistance & to prevent them from eating the little Venison they have with them."

Nov. 19 Friday
" Wind at NE with dark Cloudy Weather. People as before. Rec'd 250 Partridges from English Hunters and 120 from home Indians. They Return'd again to their Tents with more Ammunition & a little ? & Oatmeal for their Families."

Nov. 20 Saturday
" Ditto Wind & Weather. People as before. 44 Northern Indians came to the Factory with a more trifle of Venison & a few Parchment Deer Skins hardly sufficient to make us Snow Shoes this Winter.
Two of the Wood fallers & one of the Carpenters came home for Provisions & other necefsarys."

Nov. 21 Sunday
" Fine Clear Pleasant weather tho a Cold Wind from the NW. Wood fallers & Carpenters return'd to their Tents. Traded with the Northern Indians & trusted them with the some of the most Usefull Articles to enable them to provide for themselves & Families & Procure Furrs for Trade."

Nov. 22 Monday
" Ditto Weather - Armourer repairing Old Hunting Guns - Taylors at Work for Trade. 20 of our best Men Absent from the factory on duty. others wheeling snow from out of the Yard. - All the Northern Indians except one Old Man went from the factory to Procure Furrs &c for Trade & some of them are to come & kill Geese next Spring. - Receiv'd 100 Partridges & a Rabbitt from home Indians who return'd again to their Tent."

Forepart of the Day People employ'd as before - In the Afternoon open'd the water Hole took out the Provisions & put more in to freshen."

" Fresh gale at North with thick Drift'g Weather.
House Carpenter & two of the Wood fallers came home for Provisions & other necefsaries."

" Ditto Wind & Weather. Wood fallers & Carpenter returned to their Respective Tents."

Nov. 29 Monday
" Fine Clear Weather tho a Cold Wind from the NWbW Armourer making Sleds for the Hunters. Taylors making Cloaths for Trade. 20 Men Absent from the Factory on duty as last Week. Remainder sawyng Splitting Wood &c.
Some of the Home Indians came to the Factory for a Little Oatmeal Ammunition &c & return'd again to their Tents."

" Dark & Cloudy tho very moderate & mild & at Night a Little Snow with some Drift. Receiv'd 100 Partridges from Mr Prince's Tent. More of the Home Indians came to the Factory for Necefsarys. People employ'd as before."

" Wind a NW with sharp Clear weather
People employ'd as before. Indians & our Hunters that came yesterday return'd to their Tents. 20 Men absent on duty as before."

Dec. 2 Thursday
" Ditto Weather, wind variable in the SW Quarter. People employ'd as before. more of the Home Guards came to the Factory for a little Oatmeal & return'd again to their Tents."

Dec. 3 Friday
" Fresh Breeze at NE with dark Cloudy weather. some light Snow & a light Drift. People employ'd as before. Rec'd 100 Partridges from one of our Hunters who return'd again to his Tent. - One of the Carpenters Crew came home for Provisions & return'd again to his Tent."

Dec. 4 Saturday
" Ditto Weather. People employ'd as before. one of the Woodfallers came to the Factory for Provisions & return'd again to his Tent. - Some of the Home Indians that had been traping all this Fall came to the Factory with a few Furrs the flesh of 4 Beaver & two Porcupines."

Dec. 5 Sunday
" Strong Gales at NW with much Drift."

Dec. 6 Monday
" Ditto Wind & Weather. 20 Men Absent on Duty as before. - Remainder grinding Oatmeal the weather not permitting them to work out Doors."

Fore Part of the Day. People employ'd as before. in the Afternoon open'd the Water Hole. took out the Provisions & put more in to Freshen. - Receiv'd 200 Partridges from Mr Prince's Tent."

Dec. 9 Thursday
" Ditto Weather. People employ'd about necefsary Duties. Carpenters & their Afsistants came home from the woods having fell'd & Squar'd a litte Wood for the Men's New House."

Dec. 10 Friday
" Fine & Clear Weather but exceeding Cold. Carpenters and all the other People went to Cut & Beat a Track thro' the woods (towards the Bay) for the big Sled to go & fetch home the timber lately Squar'd - Receiv'd 470 Partridges from Hunters one of whome return'd again to his Tent."

Dec. 11 Saturday
" Ditto Weather. hunters return'd to their Tents. sent all hands in the big Sled for a Load of Timber lately fell & in the Afternoon they return'd."

Dec. 13 Monday
" Mild Cloudy weather in the NE Quarter with Snow. sent all Hands with the Big Sled (Officers & Cooks excepted) for a Load of Wood as Yesterday. 15 Men Absent from the Factory on Duty such a falling firewood. Hunting &c."

Dec. 14 Tuesday
"Ditto Weather. People employ'd as before.Mr Prince & two of his Men came home with 300 Partridges & inform'd me that all the Birds have intirely Left the Part he was Tenting in. What they now brought is Old Stock kill'd more than a Month ago. All the home Indians set off a Traping except two Men some Old Women & a few Children all to the Amount of Seventeen."

" Warm Pleasant weather with a great thaw. Tradesmen as before. Steward making fishing nets. Remainder of the People employ'd hawling Snow from out of the Yard and Clearing the Ground for the Foundation of the Mens House.
Late in the Evening 7 Northern Indians came for a little Ammunition and Tobacco for some of their party that are coming in with Furrs. Part of the s.d Northern Indians are to kill for us this spring."

Late in the Evening a Port Nelson Indian man and his Family came to the Factory with a few furrs & some ready Drefs Moose Skins for a Tent.

Remainder of the People went to the Hay Marsh for two Big Sled Loads of firewood - Port Nelson River Indian went from the Factory to proceed to his own Country. Two other Northern Indians came to the Factory and inform'd us that another small Gang was near this Place but are much in want of Provisions.

In the Course of this Day upwards of an Hundred Northern Indians came in & in general they seem'd to be in Distrefs. most of the Men were formerly employ'd as Goose Hunters but their Families at Present are so great that it will be impofsible for me to employ many of them on that Service tho they came here on that view.

Indeed those that visited our new Settlememnt last year and were furnished with every Necefsary are as destitute of Furrs as any of the others."

" Fine pleasant Weather with a great thaw. 22 other Northern Indians came in with a few Furrs. Traded with them and fitted out some of them with Guns &c to go and attend the Goose Season. gave the others some Presents for their Return.

" Ditto weather - Armourer repairing Indian Guns Hatchetts Kettles &c - Carpenters Cooper & Sawyer preparing Boards for the new House. others at Necefsary duties. Fitted out 8 of our best English Hunters with Guns Ammunition a Tent &c to go to the Islands & there to attend the Goose Season. Also Fitted out 4 other Men to go to 12 Mile Point to Pitch a Tent, Hawl wood &c ready for Mr Jefferson in Case he should be able to go there & serve Powder to the Indians but at Present he is very poorly. Most of the Northern Indians went from the Factory, some to attend the Goose Season at 12 Mile point. Remainder to Proceed to their own Country. - Two of our home guard Indians came in from Traping. They have been absent more than 4 Months but have brought very few furrs owing as they say to the scarsenefs of Provisions and the mischief done to their traps by the Quickquihatches."

May 5 Thursday
" Ditto weather Armourer Carpenter Cooper & Sawyer as before - Bricklayer & three Men to attend him employ'd building Piers for the Ground Plates of the New House to rest on till a Compleat Foundation can be Laid. Taylors at work for Trade, others at various necefsary Duties. Six of our home Guard Indians came in from Traping to attend the Goose season. they brought a few Furrs but they make the same Complaint as the Former two of being in general very short of Provisions and that the Quickquihatches have destroy'd several hundred Martins caught in their Traps. - 6 other Families of our home Indians are as yet unarrived and as the Spring is so far advanced I hardly expect them in till Summer.
Late in the Afternoon received one Goose & a Duck from our English Hunters at the Islands - They are the first kill'd here this Season tho' the Northern Indians Affirm'd that they saw Geese on Sunday Last."

Armourer repairing Hunting Guns - Bricklayer finish'd the Piers for the Foundation of the New House and the Carpenters with the Afsistance of the Remainder of the People Laid the Ground Plates - The intended new house is to be 30 Foot Long 24 Foot wide & 17 Foot high and is in Fact no more than an Addition to the present Building. Some of the Goose Hunters Wives came home for a little Oatmeal, Bread &c for their Support till the Geese begin to fly."

In the Afternoon I Rec'd a Letter from Mr Jefferson at 12 Mile Point that brought the Disagreeable news of Mr Prince having his hand much Shatter'd by the bursting of his gun, the forefinger of his Left hand is blown off. The Thumb broke & the Inside of the Hand much Damag'd. The Surgeon set off to his Afsistance as soon as pofsible and took such Instruments with him as he thought would be necefsary in case he sh'd be Oblig'd to amputate any Part of the Hand."

House Carpenter Sawyer & one Man began Boarding the North side of the New House. others gathering Stones to the Lime kiln ready for Burning Lime. - This Day Mr Prince & the Surgeon came home from 12 Mile Point and am happy to find that Mr Prince is not likely to lose any thing more than the fore finger for the Thumb is much Broke & the adjacent Part of the Hand much wounded yet it's hop'd it will not endanger the use of the Hand."

House Carpenter Sawyer & one Man at work on the New House. sent three men to the Islands to Afsist them in getting their Tent Bedding &c to the Factory as the Season is over at that department. - Bricklayer and the remainder of the People employ'd seting the Lime Kiln. Two Men employ'd brewing small Beer.
Our Islands Hunters that came home this Day have had such Poor Succefs, that dureing the Winter Season they have only kill'd 192 Geese 18 Ducks & one Crane which is not half the Number kill'd at that Place last Year."

June 4 Saturday
" Wind & Weather variable. Tradesmen & Afsistants employ'd as before. Sent 4 Men to 12 Miles Point to Afsist Mr Jefferson & his Men home and before Noon they arrived. - Remainder of the People at necefsary duties. This Day all the Home Indians came to the Factory from the Goose Tent.
It appears from Mr Jefferson account that the Indians have kill'd 1686 Geese and 7 Swans which together with what was kill'd by our People at the Islands & some few kill'd near the Factory makes the Total kill'd this Spring to be 1892 Geese 8 Swans & 18 Ducks which is only 145 Geese more than what was kill'd last Year tho we had near three times the Number of Hunters. Indeed the Season all throughout was so awkward owing to constant Northerly winds that when it was natural to expect the Geese plenty they was so scarse that I was apprehensive we sh'd not be able to salt one Cask but lukily we have 12 Hogsheads for future use."

Bricklayer & the Remainder of the People laying the Foundation of the Fireplace in the New House - Rec'd 50 small Jack Fish & a Few Geese from Fishermen they inform me that the Ice of the River is not yet Broke up only a small String of open Water along the North side which enabled them to get up to the usual fishing Places but the middle of the River is to appearances as hard Froze as it was in the middle of Winter, and not a Drop of Water to be seen at sea from the Top of the most Elevated Situation. Fishermen return'd up the River to catch more fish."

Rafters came home with their Bedding having raft'd all the firewood that was haul'd out to the Rivers side last Winter.
Received the flesh of two Fine Deer & 30 Geese from home Indians who return'd again over the River with more Ammunition &c."

Mate of the Sloop making Fenders & Straping Buoys for the Sloop. - Thomas Spence (whome I've appointed Harpooner) and one Man fixing their Tackle for the Fishery. Sent two Men up the River to catch more Fish. Steward mending Old Fishing Nets - Boy employ'd Writeing. Remainder of the People employ'd carrying in Clay &c in order to make some Garden Ground which may be serviceable next Year, but at the Present the Summer is so far advanc'd that all our efforts will not enable us to raise any more than a little early Sallading. Rec'd 14 Geese & 8 Joints of Poor Venison from the home Indians. They inform'd me that some of our mising home Guard has Join'd them on the other side & will be with us in a few Days. House Carpenter had the misfortune to cut his hand so as to render it uselefs for the Present."

Early in the Afternoon Eight Canoes of Port Nelson Indians came to the Factory but seem'd to have nothing with them except a couple of tents a little Shoe Leather &c as some of them traded all their Furrs at York Factory in the Spring.

" Fresh Breeze at West Tradesmen and their Afsistants employ'd as before. sent the Boat for more Bricks also two Men in a Skift down towards the Stone Fort with Nets to endeavour to catch Salmon, but the River and the Bay is as Yet so full of Ice that there is little hopes of Succefs. Remainder of People at Necefsary Duties.

Early in the Morning the Sloop Master & his Crew together with the Shipwright transport'd the Sloop from the End of the Launch to the Mouth of the Sloops Cove for the more Conveniently breaming & paying her Bottom. Remainder of the Tradesmen and their Afsistants employ'd as before. Two men employ'd catching fish without any Succefs.
Remainder of the People breaking Lime stones ready for burning more Lime. Traded with more of the upland Indians & gave them some presents ready for their return."

" Wind at SW with very hot weather. Armourer and his man cleaning the Sloops small Arms. - Bricklayer & one Man preparing for Brewing small Beer. House Carpenter began puting up some of the Frameing of the Partitions in the Mens new House. 7 Men on board the Sloop at the Cove. Two Men endeavouring to catch fish. Three employ'd on the whale Fishery. sent all the remainder of our little Crew over to the Haymarsh for a few Rafts of firewood and at Night they return'd with 14 Rafts. The Sloops being finish'd she this day haul'd of into the River & there came to an Anchor & began to take Ballast for the Voyage. Receiv'd 5 Salmon & a few Tittimeg from fishermen which is the greatest Succefs they have had in one Day this Season fish of all kinds are the scarsest ever was known and all our home Indians are gone a considerable Distance from the Factory out of the way of the uplanders not a Bit of fresh Provision is there to be got nor is there a small Bird to be seen in our Marshes the like was never known at this Place and at this Season of Year."

July 10 Sunday
" Ditto weather Perform'd Divine Service. some of the Sloops Crew came on Shore to prepare for Brewing their Beer. The Shipwright also came on Shore from the Sloop having compleatly fitted her for the Voyage. Sent two men up the River with nets to endeavour to catch Jack as not a single Salmon is to be caught in any Part of the River. In the Evening sent all the ablest of our Men to the Hay marsh in two Boats for more Rafts of firewood."

July 11 Monday
" First part of the Day excefsive hot & sultry the middle very Loud Thunder some Lightning & very heavy Rain, but towards Evening fine Pleasant Weather. Armourer and his Man (both Invalids) employ'd cleaning some of the Broad Bayonets that by some Accident or other has become very rusty. People that was sent for firewood came home with 4 Rafts all they could get to Float the Tides being so very Low. Harpooner & his Crew came home for Provisions not having any succefs since Thursday Last. In the Evening they return'd again up the River with whom I sent another Man to Afsist in that Duty, which is more than was ever employ'd in one Boat on that Service as their constant Compliment was allways three."

Remainder of our small Crew carrying up Part of the firewood Lately brought home & setting it in a Pile for future use - Sloops Boat came on Shore for the Remainder of their Trading Goods Provisions &c & return'd again with every Article - At the same time gave Mr Prince his sailing Orders. And at Night Mr Prince weigh'd Anchor & went to Sea tho the River & Bay is full of Ice."

" Fine Pleasant weather & almost Calm. People employ'd as before - Two Men in the Surgeon's List. In the Afternoon the Sloop was in Sight a little to the NW of Esquimaux Point. She was then under Sail & seem'd to be among Sailing or Stragling Ice, but at some distance without her it appear'd to be a Solid Wall."

July 20 Wednesday
" Wind SE a fresh Breeze the weather Variable from warm Sun shine to cold & Raw with a thick flying Fogg - Receiv'd 60 Fine Jack from Fishermen - People employ'd carrying up the Remainder of the firewood that was lately brought home & setting it in a Pile as usual. Receiv'd the flesh of a small Deer from home Indians who return'd again over the River to their Families. 4 Men employ'd on the white Whale fishery. 7 in the Sloop & 2 in the Surgeon's List."

July 21 Thursday
" Hot & Sultry. Armourer reparing old Guns. Cooper making Pails. House Carpenter Sawyer & one man fitting up some of the Cabins in the new House. Shipwright & one man repairing one of the Old Boats. Bricklayer & the Remainder of the People fill'd the Lime Kiln with Stones & Fewel & set it on Fire. Some of the Home Indians and their Families came from over the River & brought the flesh of two small Deer."

July 22 Friday
" Ditto weather. Early in the Morning sent a boat and 7 Men to Twelve mile Point for Part of the Geese kill'd there last Spring. Armourer employ'd as before. Bricklayer Plaistering the Front of the New House. House Carpenter plaining & edgeing Boards for the mens Cabins - Cooks & Steward employ'd making the Pickle ready for the Geese."

July 23 Saturday
" Wind SE with fine Pleasant weather. Boat return'd from 12 Mile Point with 4 Hogsheads of Geese - Receiv'd the Flesh of a small Deer from home Indians. People employ'd about necefsary Duties. Harpooner & his Crew came home with 6 White Whale & our Fishermen came from up the River with 14 fine Jack Fish. The Home Indians that are Tenting on the Plantation employ'd making & Netting snow Shoes for the use of our People next Winter.

House Carpenter Cooper Sawyer & one Man putting up some of the Cabins in the Mens new Lower Guard Room - Shipwright & one Man repairing the Long Boat. Remainder of the People shifted and Air'd the Powder & did other necefsary Jobs - Fitted out most of our home Indians with Ammunition & other necefsaries to go Inland in order that they may be ready on the Spot to kill Martins & other Animals of the Furr kind as soon as their Skins are in Season. Only 5 Indian Men is to Remain near the Factory to hunt Geese in the fall, go with the Packett &c - One Man in Surgeon's List."

" Fine Pleasant Weather - Variable Wind. Sent 8 Men in the Long Boat to 12 Mile Point for the Remainder of the Geese kill'd and Salted there last Spring. Cooper preparing Casks for packing Oil, other Tradesmen as before. Two Men sawing boards for the New House. Harpooner and his Crew began boiling the Oil. About 5 PM saw a Sail in the Offing standing in for the River Mouth & at Night she came to an Anchor a little to the Eastward of Cape Merry."

" Wind & weather Variable early in the Morning the Prince Rupert Captain Joshua Tunstall came to anchor in our River & in the Evening the Captain came on Shore with the Packett - Longboat Return'd from 12 Mile Point with the Geese. Sent the Sloop down to the Ship to be ready to take out Part of the Outward Bound Cargo - Received a few Young Geese from Home Indians."
