Carlton District 23 Jan. 1816
Sir,
From the information given to us at this Place by some Indians belonging to this River who went to trade at Green Lake, of your incefsant endeavours to draw them to your Quarter by large Presents & immoderate & unreasonable Quantities of Goods given to them in exchange for their Furs &c. I in the behalf of the concern to which I belong do inform & afsert to you that such conduct is calculated to do manifest injury to the interest of the concern in this District for in its practice it is impolite? by paying twice for the Furs they kill (being all largely indebted to this establishments in this River) & its concequences destruction to trade. as tending directly to Disorgonize the Indians by making them Saucy indolent & superadding? honesty to the great Shame they now pofses in the payments of their Debts. I claim no authority or Controul over you my only authority being reason my argument the facts adduced the Contagion is already among the Indians of this place & to prevent it spreading I must oppose with my people in conjunstion with the other concern having an agreement with them respecting the Indians your efforts to destroy the Trade of this Department. This Note is a true coppy to the one forwarded to the other House in hopes that both parties will see the propriety in putting an end to such practice so injurious to the Trade of this District & to the interest of the concern in general. - To the Gentleman in charge for the Hudsons Bay Company at Green Lake.
I am yours &c.
John P. Pruden."
