" To the Honble Commttee of the Honble Hudsons Bay Company
Honble Sirs
A dispute having arisen last Night between Mr Hugh Heney and Mr Archibald Meason, and what it concerned is beyond my Knowledge, but after the dispute was ended Mr Meason came in the Tradesmen House and fell asleep. about 1/2 an Hour after came in Mr Heney in the afore mentioned House (with his Brace of Pistols on him) and enquired if Mr Mason was there to which the Men answered in the affirmative (Yes) and in Bed. The Men on the Instant disarmed him and told him it was not Customary for Masters to go amongst their Men armed and also said they would no longer be under his Subjections or Orders - And when-ever the Honble Company Thinks proper to call them home concerning this Behaviour They are Ready to Plead their cause. And many other such things pafsed between Mr Heney and Men, which is too tedious here to relate, as I cannot give Their Reasons why - but finding the House in want of a Master I undertook it and manage the Businefs to the best of my knowledge.

" A Copy of a Letter Received March 7th from Alexander Kennedy to Mr Hugh Heney - Swan River Feb. 18 1811

Dear Sir,
I had the pleasure of receiving your favour of the 19th Ult. at this plain Yesterday. Your People remaining at the Indian Elbow till the return of my Men who brought your Letters. -
I was happy to hear of your safe Arrival at the Red River, by the return of James Gaddy in the Fall tho' I was then deprived the pleasure of hearing it from yourself - Upon Considerations of your having procured as much Provisions below in Red River as you will be able to take out. I have relinquished my design of carrying any down that way. if I could procure it for I have not yet got as much as will be necefsary to carry out by our Old Track, we having been obliged to eat what was procured in the Fall for want of Green Meat. Lately a few Buffaloe has come about out of which I expect we will be able to get a Supply till Spring. I therefore return the Nails by your People and am very much obliged by your Readinefs in Complying with my Request. they would have been of great Service to me if I could have taken the advantage of your goodnefs. I likewise send you two falling Axes which is all I have but what is in use. - & I have wrote to the Person in Charge at the Indian Elbow to let your People have as much Powder or Tobacco (or part of both) as they can take with them, as I think I will not be short of these Articles but owing to the great distance they have to Travel and the deep Snow I doubt they will not be able to take much (if any). Having lost my Interpreter in the Fall and another poor fellow unfit for Duty by a disorder in the hand, I will not be able to take or send above two Men your way in the Spring as I have one Battaux and a Canoe which require ten Men to take them out and I have only Thirteen Men altogether - however I think I shall be able to bring down two with myself in the Spring to Brandon House as soon as the River opens, when you may depend on receiving a Keg of Powder, and I think a Roll of Tobacco as from appearances at present I think I shall be able to spare both in case they may be of use to you there if the Spring proves early and you could benefit by having these articles sooner (or any else in my pofsefsion) I could supply you with Horses to take it down, if you find it necefsary and Convenient to send me word before - I have not yet between both these Posts got above 300 MB (to reckon in the old way) and as the Ind. hereabouts are not reconciled to the Price we pay for their Produce particularly the plain Indians, my hopes between this and Spring are very Slender.

Wishing we may be able to congratulate each other on a more favourable turn then our fears at present suggests.
I remain
Dear Sir
Your very Hble & most Obed. Servant
Alexander Kennedy
PS. I will have no opportunity of forwarding Mr Aulds Letters before the Embarkation.

" From Mr James Halcro to Mr Hugh Heney Carleton House Feb. 22nd 1811

Dear Sir,
By the orders of Mr Kennedy I send you the following Articles (viz) Gun Powder 42 lb, Tobacco ?ish Rolls 34 lb. twelve in number and two falling Axes and your two parcels of Nails again and have also supply'd your Men with Tobacco. George Setter 2 3/4 lb John Easter 3 lb.

Dear Sir
Yours Sincerly
James Halcro
PS. Excuse me as I am no Scholar, but endeavour my best. I am apt to think that this, will scarce be ligible.

" To Mr Alexander Kennedy Brandon House March 14th 1811

Dear Sir,
Mr Hugh Heney being not on the Spot when our People arrived with the Letters and articles sent. we opened them and finding them to consist with the Company's Duty or Interest we cannot blame ourselves for so acting - Your presence will be particularly required here this Spring on account of our having disposted Mr Heney as his Conduct has been so Misterious since his arrival as could not be borne any longer - For to give you a detail of our Proceedings would be too long and tedious for a Letter and therefore we shall let it be till we have that pleasure of seeing you in the Spring - As to the Powder and Tobacco we are in reallity scarce of? and if it was pofsible of contriving any means of sending or bringing down with Yourself would greatly oblige us (if not) We shall send Men up for it.
We conclude with wishing you better Prospects of Trade, as to our own is but Slender also.
We are
Dear Sir
