Sept. 14 1790
" Tuesday Wind variable Easterly which prevented the Sloop from going away. In the Evening Mr Kipling was seized with a paralytic fit which entirely deprived him of sence & speech and he is now dangerously ill. Sabethmo? and Brothers came in to hunt brought Venison and Deer skins. the few people at home employed building a wooden Canoe & stowing away Cargo."
Sept. 15
" Wednesday light airs of wind all round the Compafs about 10 AM Capt. Richards & Mr McNab sailed in the Sloop for the ship. got up two of our boats as we shall soon be too few men for that duty; the Shipwright Cooper and Carpenter at work on the wooden Canoe two sawing timber & gunwales for ditto. the others stowing away Cargo. Kipling continues very bad. the wounded man rather mending. Jecob Muscawetone & the last arrived. hunting Indians still drunk."
Sept. 16
" Thursday Wind variable from South to West Muscoweton Jecob and their young man took debt, traded 2 ? & 30 Geese. Bews mending indian Guns. self with Mr Hodgson in the Warehouse busy with the Indians. Sent Mr Prince and five men in a boat with Edw'd Cloustone to serve powder and shot at Canoes Rivers. An Indian came from Chickney with a Letter from Mr Knowles requesting necefsaries. the people at home employed nearly as before. Mr Kipling very ill. one man attending him."

" Friday Wind NW cold Wr. and blows fresh the people employed as before several of our hunting indians pitched away Mr Kipling still very ill Muscowetone and family pitched away to hunt at Chickney. sent notes by them to Mr Knowles. Observe the Gunpowder to be much better than usual."
Sept. 18
" Saturday Wind variable from SW to South 2 brewing the others employed as before. several indians came in from the Southward with geese by whom I learn that Prince & men have got their boat neaped & cannot get back. traded 42 geese & salted a barrel."
Sept. 19
" Sunday Wind S at 7 AM saw a Vefsel in the offing which proved to be Shallop several Indians came in with geese & Mr Prince & men returned overloaded having been obliged to leave the Battau as their had not been a tide to float her the Shipwright and men Emloyed getting the Canoe ready for gloucester did not perform divine service."
Sept. 20
" Monday Wind NW the Shallop got up to the Launch in the morning unloaded her & salted two casks of geese several Indians came in from Nward apparently disatisfied. got every thing ready for an additional supply to Mr Knowles who sent me several notes. Cookenap & gang came in with deer skins. shall send off Jenkin to Mr Knowles (tomorrow) who does not quite please my Indians."
Sept. 21
" Tuesday Wind variable from W to NW blows hard ballasted the Shallop and in the afternoon she sailed for the Ship. the people at home variously employed attending Indians & packing for gloucester. sent Jenkin the Cooper & 4 men with additional necefsarys for the Tent at Chickney. Capt. Wauseakeeshick came in with a little Venison & leather. Mr Kipling still keeps his bed."

" Wednesday Wind Variable from WNW to WSW trusted part of the indians most of them still very drunk. from Venison & leather. the people employed in preparing for Gloucester & attending on the Natives. Engaged two Ind. to go with Mr Hodgson to Henley. Shipwright caulking the new Canoe. McKimie began upon the new oven. Mr Clouston came from canoes rivers for necefsary's. In packing the meat for gloster I cannot help observing the pieces are uncommon small the same casks that used to hold 40 pieces are now marked 50 which is a great difference to men working hard in tracking boats up the River."

" Thursday Wind variable from W to South the Indians still drunk finished the wooden Canoe launched her & named her the dispatch. loaded her several Indians came in with geese. Edw. Clouston returned to canoes rivers."
Sept. 24
" Friday Wind SE blows fresh towards evening the Sloop came up to the launch. About 2 AM Mr Prince, Rob. Isbister, Hugh Flatt Jn Slater of Moose & 2 Ind. set off in the Canoe dispatch for Gloster. and at 4 pm the men returned from Chickney with 800 Geese. the Shipwright & mate cleaning the work yard. the Smith & mate making hatchets for Henley. Jn McKimie & mate building the mens oven. the rest making pickle and curing geese. several Indians came in with geese to trade for Brandy."
Sept. 25
" Saturday Light airs of wind all round the Compafs sultry Wr & in the Evening much rain thunder & lightning Unloaded the Sloop and find a great number of Bales still to come besides Flour Brandy Oatmeal &c which will make it necefsary to have another Trip Mr Kipling still unable to move without afsistance. Traded 15 geese for Brandy."

" Sunday Wind SW blows a hurrican which carried away part our Launch the Sloop drove to her Anchor. Performed divine Service. Mr Knowles came from Chickney. some Indians came in with geese to trade for brandy."
Sept. 27
" Monday Wind NW moderate Wr ballasted the Sloop about 2 pm she sailed for Moose Fort sent a letter to Mr Thomas. the Shipwright & 3 men resetting stockades. Jn Linklater & 3 securing the launch. Jn McKimie building the Men's oven. got a fresh supply of Powder & shot ready for Chickney & the half hunting Brandy to the Indians hunting there. Sagot came in with geese and the indians of yesterday went away."
Sept. 28
" Tuesday Wind SW blows fresh J Linklater & two men repairing the Launch; the Shipwright & two men resetting stockades round his yard. the two Writers at their employ. the Armourer repairing. Wm Kirk sick but at work for Mr Knowles. Mr Kipling rather better some indians came from the Sward with geese for brandy. brought a letter from E Cloustone by which I find there's few geese to be got. sent Mr Knowles & six men in a Boat with Casks powder & Shot and 20 gallons of Brandy for the hunt there. an indian brought a Seal."

" Wednesday Wind Gentle warm Wr at 9 AM the Shallop appeared in the offing. with the Evening tide she got up. the Shipwright & 3 men finished the stockades & stabling off some ground for the Sheep, the Smith repairing guns. Cobb & the Writers with Mr Hodgson & self overhaling Cargo received. several Indians came in with geese."

" Thursday Wind Variable from South to NW unloaded the Shallop & ballasted her. the men returned from Chickney with 200 geese & only one barrel salted which is but poor prospects for us. stowed by all the Bales & packed several articles for Henley."

" Friday Wind Variable clear Wr. gave the Shallop her dispatches but the wind coming foul she coud not get out - busy employed packing for Henley House and stowing by Cargo. Annacancoosh came in for debt & others arrived with geese. Mr Clouston came from Canoes rivers for salt & Casks. sent two indians to Chickney for Joseph Martin."

" Saturday Wind Variable from SW to West about 9 AM the Shallop proceeded down the river but the wind being very high. she brought up near the sand heads. In the fornoon the Sloop appeared in the Offing but the tide being late and wind high she did not get up. finished packing for Henley & Trusted Annacaucoosh &c men employed brewing & packing for Henley."

" Sunday Wind blows exceeding hard that the Sloop could not tye alongside the launch. Joseph Martin & the two indians returned from Chickney & Mr Clouston went to his tent. in the Even'g the Shallop went out."
Oct. 4
" Monday Wind NW with the morning tide J Linklater Stromnefs. J. Martin, Tho. Norn, Rob. Twatt, G Sebiston, Joseph Spence & Alex Groundwater with 3 indians sett off in two Battauxs for Henley and Mr Hodgson & an Indian followed soon after. the people at home unloading the Sloop and with the afsistance of their Crew overhaling the Cargo some indians came with geese."

" Tuesday Wind NW froze sharp all Night with the morning tide gave Mr Vaversar his dispatches and the Sloop sailed for Moose. several Indians came in with very few geese & in the Even'g Poucathecat and sons came in for debt being freightened at the appearance of ice out to sea. this is a most melancholly prospect for us as there are only five Casks of Geese at Chickney 6 at Canoes Rivers and 12 at the Fort in all 23 which is most? one third part the quantity killed the last year. the Bricklayer and one man rebuilding the men's oven."
Oct. 6
" Wednesday Wind NW blows fresh and froze hard last night. Early this morning sent J. Daniel & 4 men in a Boat to get the Geese from Chickney. the indians of yesterday drunk & what is worse prevents those Ind. that would hunt from killing geese. one of the writers alternately at the gates. Cobb attending the Natives & Kirk making Coats for them which with self Mr Kipling and surgeon is all out present Number. Trusted Paucathecat gang. two families came in from the Sward for Debt by whom I learn Mr Cloustone has been trying with the afsistance of the indians to get the geese home but it blowing hard. he was obliged to relinquish his design."

" Thursday Wind continues NW self & officers busy all day in trusting the natives & paying the indians for the hunt. Jacob Corrigal cooking & domestically employed several Indians came in with geese. brought a Child in a most distrefsed state having a scrophulous ulcer."
Oct. 8
" Friday Wind North cold Wr with snow Pascathecat & Sons went away in the morning & in the Evening Mr Knowles returned with the Boat from Chickney and 807 geese a sad reverse of the last year but the indians are affraid themselves of starving they see we shall not be able to help them. the geese are not sufficiently plenty to enable them to dry any for their winter Consumption & they want to get to a Country where deer plenty. sent Kirk to stay with Jenkin at bonds creek to serve out powder as some will still hunt. the Cooper stays there to put up Casks. in the Evening three more families of indians came in to take debt. these continual North winds put in very high tides."

" Saturday Wind variable from NW to SW the few people at home employed attending upon indians and salting geese. Mr Clouston came from Canoes rivers for salt and Casks he has 1300 geese. Cookenap & his relations came in for debt as did Puckutawnish & Mickywauban?"

" Sunday Wind west two more families of indians came for debt. had no publick service. hauled the Seine, without succefs."

" Monday Wind South warm Wr Mr Cloustone & 3 men went to Canoes rivers to fetch geese. more indians came in for Debt & very greedy for Brandy tho' they have little geese to trade. the few ment at home with Mr Kipling and self putting the wharhouse in order at 4 PM John Cromartie, Ja Yorston, Mag. Flaws, Jn Towers, Wm Windwick & Peter Laughton returned from inland. likewise John Slater of Moose who exchanged the thirds? days Journey above Henley for Andrew Taylor likewise Mefs Donald McKay and John McKay Traders and John Frail engaged at Osnaburgh as a Labourer it is a great concern to me to see Gentleman come down here to engage in the Company's service and I have no men to send with them.
In the Evening Ecactch? & Trout came in for debt. one of the indians returned from afsisting Mr Goodwin to glout'r"

" Tuesday Wind W fine Wr. the men fron inland resting themselves. the writers at their employ Mr Clouston & men returned from Canoes rivers with 1660 geese. most of the Indians came in to take debt. tho' from the appearance of the Wr we may still expect a long fall."

" Wednesday Wind Southerly warm Wr. self tormented with a rhumatic pain in my face. All the Sward indians came in for debt. the smith mending guns. Shipwright collecting timber for a Battaux. the others pickling geese and indian came in with a Seal."
Oct. 14
" Thursday Wind SE calm mild weather most of the southward indians took debt. Cockatic came in for the same purpose. Shipwright & 1 man collecting boats timbers. Jn McKimie finished the Oven and began upon the men's stove the rest taking up the Launch in the evening two more Ind. came in for debt. As our goose hunt is greatly short of the quantity we want. got our Seine ready for hauling with tomorrow morning's tide it is unfortunate the geese were left numerous when the great exertions our rivals are making above requires all the men & provisions we can get to encounter them."

" Friday Wind Notherly moderate weather the men hauling the Seine in the morning with midling succefs More indians came in for debt self with Mr Kipling in the warehouse all day. In the afternoon the men began to take up Potatoes Traded 67 Geese & salted another Cask."

" Saturday Light airs variable sent five men in a boat to bring home fish in from the goose tent as most of the indians have taken debt. Shipwright and one man collecting timbers the others taking up our vegatables. An Indian came in with a Seal. Jenkin & men returned with 170 geese."

" Wednesday Wind SW blows fresh. Shipwright & Agace? preparing battaux timbers the Smith Jobbing Taylors at work for Mr Man & the men Jn McKimie setting a stove. the Cook as usual. Writers at their Employ sent Cobb to look after the Cattle he returned having only seen six. Nappish & Tabethema brought 45 geese & two seals. sent 4 men in a wooden Canoe with Jenkin to his winter quarters. Sent Mr Knowles and two men to fish at Yarrows Creek."

" Thursday Wind SW with cloudy Weather and rain the people employed as before. at 6 PM J Linklater Stromnefs, Robt. Twatt, Geo Sebiston, Alex Groundwater. J Spence & Tho Norn likewise Rich. Anderson & an indians returned from the Henley Journey. J Martin was detained according to my orders by J Daniel to hunt. Tabethema & Chickahennifs took debt in readinefs to go away tomorrow."

" Friday Wind Sly the men that returned from inland making bread & variously employed. several indians who had taken debt came in with 100 geese & say they are now uncommon plenty & lament there is not Englishmen at Chickney to supply them with powder & shot. the Indians exprefs much suppize at their coming so late as 10 days ago scrarce there was scrarce a goose to be seen."

" Monday Wind variable from south to East with snow. sent the Shipwright & nine men to raft firewood. In the Even'g Mr Prince, Robt. Isbister, Hugh Flatt. And. Taylor & 21 Ind. arrived from Gloucester."

" Tuesday Wind Nly froze sharp last Night the few people at home variously employed in hauling the Seine & & got about 1000 small fish. two indians bro't a few geese the major part went away last Night."
Oct. 27
" Wednesday Wind variable all round the Compafs the people employed as before got only a few fish & the ice in such a state as to prevent Mr Knowles from setting his netts tho' he as a fine stage & every thing in readinefs for drying fish. the indians of yesterday went away. as did the two Indians that returned from gloster, poor old Nappish & his family came in to be maintained upon our pease & oatmeal which with those here before makes 21 old feeble or Widows & Orphans to be maintained upon our poor hunt."

" Thursday Wind SE blows fresh with some difficulty our men brought home two rafts in the Evening Early this morn'g Sent Mr Prince Robt. Twatt & And. Taylor in a Wooden to hunt at Chickney. Linklater stromnefs making a rail to the Belfry stairs. Smith repairing guns Kirk at work for self Cobb as usual the Writers at their Employ one Cooking J Corrigal waiting on self. sent Isbister to look after the Cattle conjecture he has lost himself as he has not yet returned."

" Friday Wind Westerly being much concern'd at Robt Isbisters long stay sent two indians after him he returned about 11 OClock having found his error. thank god no ways hurt. all the Ind. except one, who yet remains to come in took debt.Mr Knowles came from his Tent the people employed in taking up the boats & preparing all snug for the Winter."

" Saturday Calm fair Wr. Early this morning John Eunson, Hen. Lenay, Edw. Sinclair, David Spence, Laughlan Simson, Ja Taylor, Ja Lutitt, Jn Clouston, Jn Brafs he went from Henley. Peter Burston & Hen. Thompson returned from Osnaburgh Journey having left Donald Thompson at Henley & Wm Lutitt with Jenkin Ja Taylor Jn Cloustone & Peter Burston are received from gloster. Ja Brown is detained at Osnaurgh as part of that Complement. the Shipwright and mate battaux building Carpenter & mate fitting up the North shed. Jn McKimie & 1 man repairing the Cook room the rest hauled the Seine with very trifling succefs & got up the Remainder of our Boats. an Indian brought the flesh of one & skins of 3 Beaver & went away again."

" Monday Wind Easterly with snow most part of the day. Shipwright & mate battaux building Carpenter mak'g a door to the north shed. Cooper helving hatchets 11 men preparing to Collect timber at saw pit inland. two brewing 2 at the pit saw two lame. The Taylor & Mag. Flatt at work for the men Eunson & 3 with Mr Kipling in the warehouse Mr Clouston with the Writers at their Books."

" Tuesday Wind NE more clear weather sent Jn Eunson & 4 men and the 11 Wooders in a Boat to Sawpit Island. Cobb busy overhauling provisions the rest as before."

" Wednesday Wind NE blows fresh & with the flood much Ice floated up the river. sent 5 men to look after some tame geese we lost yesterday & it was with much difficulty they returned the ice was so thick. 4 men went to look after the Cattle they returned without seeing them. rwo men sawing boards pr Shipwright. Taylors at work for the men. Carpenter fitting up the shed. the rest variously employed in clearing the plantation of Willows & stowing by naval stores. the boar goared the horse dangerously in two places. " Friday Wind SW with snow finished packing the Osnaburgh bale goods. Shipwright laid the Keel of a new Battaux. in opening 294 found the Jack twine wet mouldy & rotten and the iron bales of the Kettles quite rusty having as we suppose got wet on board the Ship."

" Saturday Wind SE warm Weather with snow the people employed nearly as before the wooders came home to bake bread. observed Mr Knowles men on the other side but the river is not in a state to venture upon."
Nov. 14
" Sunday Wind South warm weather with snow towards Evening perform'd divine service. Mr Knowles & men returned with much difficulty the precarious state of the River prevented him getting any fish as he could not set his Nett."
Nov. 15
" Monday Wind Nly mild weather. the Shipwright & mate Battaux building. Carpenter at work upon the inside of the new shed. Mr Clouston & the Cooper making snow shoes. Kirk & Mag Flatt at work for Mr Kipling & the men. Bews & mate making iron work for the shed. two brewing 4 at the pitt saw 11 men returned to their Tent. the writers at their Employ. the rest got home the Cattle & domestically employed. Our stock of Cattle is now reduced to 12. 7 of which are oxen or Bulls if it was not for their hauling home firewood it would scrarce be worth while to make hay for them. the river is almost navagable for a boat."

" Tuesday Wind SW still continues moderate weather. 2 hunting. Cobb cutting out coats for trade. the men that were brewing, cutting wood, the rest as before. 15 partridges. they are not yet plenty to Nett & if they were there is too little snow on the ground to admit of it."

" Wednesday Wind SW fine sharp weather. Jn McKimie and Frail putting up triangles for guns the rest as before."

" Thursday Wind South the Smith made a pair of tongs Taylors at work for the men. 3 hunting got 30 partridges. two made a water hole the others employed as on Monday."

Carpenter & 1 man making a frame for the drawers. Taylors at work for the men. cooper planing staves for Sleds. one making netts for freshening provisions. " Tuesday Wind NW fine clear weather people employed nearly as before. Pickwap & two young fellows came in for supplies of oatmeal & geese & Medicines for poor Chickahennifs who is very ill. they brought 2 fresh Beaver 2 Catts & 120 Rabbets."

" Wednesday Wind west sharp weather. 10 men hauling home wood two men brewing the others employed nearly as before. the Indians of yesterday went away with a good supply of meal to the families of Chickahennifs & his Brother to enable them to stay out."

" Thursday Wind variable westerly sharp weather Jn Eunson making fishing netts two planing sleds the tradesmen as on Monday last. two getting the yokes &c ready for the Cattle the rest hauling home & cutting wood."

" Friday Wind Variable SEasterly moderate weather two men killed a barren Cow Wt 320 lb. the others employed nearly as before two hunters got 12 partridges. so very little snow on the ground was scrace ever know at this season."

Taylors at work for Trade two hunting got only 3 birds the others Cooking & domestically employed. the Indian went away on the 18th inst reurned in a great freight having met with a Moose Indian, Narnash, who has killed his own Brother & his Brothers wife & is supposed to have killed two families of my Indians and another of Moose indians. they say he eats them & are urgent with me to kill him if he should come here. such a great number of indians to feed when we have only 3 Casks of geese its truly unfortunate & many of them are perfect skeletons. I cannot deny them a part of what little we have. Nappish's Wife brot 40 Rabbits. he is truly disconsolate upon this occasion as the Canibal is his Son as was the Brother he murdered."

Mefs Kipling & Hudson & the rest of the people filling Brandy for Inland packing meal in Kegs & Tobacco in rolls.could only find one roll of Tobacco good among all the stock sent out & what is most supprizing the inner parts of the roll is the most rotten. this is a very unfortunate Circumstance for independant of the heavy lofs such an enormous quantity of Tobacco must prove to the Company it disables us from supplying the inland settlements with an Eighth of the quantity they require & this at the time the Canadians are opposing us so vigorously - this Tobacco must have been damaged before it left England having been carefully preserved here & appeared to be in good condition when received the last fall from Europe. We think the person who supplied this should be made acquainted with it."

" Sunday Wind Variable Southerly the Sloop sailed from the Launch. Discharged Mr James Hudson. the Sloop in casting off through negligence carried away part of our Launch. Entertained John Fidler, James Fidler & Magnus Cleat."

With the tide sent David Saunderson & 8 men in a Boat with Necefsarys to serve out powder & shot & Mr Jn McKay & Tho Harvey to take care of a tent & shortly after Jenkin Daniel Jn Fidler Ja Johnson Magnus Cleat Nicol Folster Samuel Brown Jasper Corrigal And. Flatt James Fidler Alex Moad & Tho Tullock in the Henley Boat with goods for that place & Mr Prince with four men to Afsist them one day as they are mostly new hands.
